Virgin HUB 3.0 Speed Issue - after HUB!

    Hi All!

I am hoping someone out here can help me with my issue! When I plug into my HUB 3.0 (Modem Only Mode) straight with a CAT5e Patch cable I get my 240Mbps as I should using broadbandspeedtest.ie. Now, when I attached one of my routers (I have 3 that I have tried now) my speed drop to 80-90Mbps! I have tried this with my Netgear WNDR4300, ASUS RT-AC1200 and my old Netgear WNR2000. All 3 of these should be able to handle at least up to 300Mbps with no problem!

I have reset all the these routers to default settings to try an get more speed out of them, but with no luck! Now for the awkward question, does Virgin do this on purpose? Do they have something "software wise" that stops me from getting the required speed after my HUB3.0? I need to use my own Router for better wifi range and to connect my network printer and NAS.

Any help, advise and guidance would really be appreciated!!

Cables can affect speeds, are you using cat5e or better?

WNR2000: Five (5) 10/100 (1 WAN and 4 LAN) Fast Ethernet ports with auto-sensing technology
WNDR3400: Suitable up to 305Mb WAN to LAN
    AC1200: RJ45 for 10/100 BaseT for WAN x 1, RJ45 for 10/100 BaseT for LAN x 4

You need to spend the money to really utilize a 240Mb connection, its not 20Mb DSL. The WNDR3400 should hit the full whack but its wireless will be a large bottleneck.

It looks like WNR2000 and RT-AC1200 only have 10/100 fast ethernet uplinks, please check their tech specs here
    https://www.netgear.com/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/WNR2000.aspx#tab-techspecs
    https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RT-AC1200/specifications/

So, even though they advertise faster Wifi speeds (N and AC), you will be limited to 100Mb while connected to Internet: this may explain why you are only getting ~80-90Mb

wndr4300 should be fine, though, even if Wifi may still be a bottleneck

ED E is basically correct stating you need faster router(s) to fully utilize your Mb line, possibly using Ethernet cables.

Thats so cheeky, selling a AC1200 router with a 100mb port.

Either way, what speed do you get wired into the WNDR4300?

Thanx all for all the replies...

I completely get the WNR2000 might not deliver the ~200Mbps, but like most of you mentioned...the WNDR3400 will do it easily! What is going wrong then? With the same cable CAT5e or CAT6 patch lead I plug my laptop into the HUB and test is to 240Mbps. I take a second cable and test the number 2 port on the HUB with that cable (port one CAT5e and port two CAT6 cable) and both give the same speed of about 235Mbps. I leave the CAT5e cable plugged in and plug the other end into the router(WNDR3400) and the CAT6 cable from the router into my laptop and check the speed then....bang down to 70Mbps!!! This seriously does not make sense and both cables were bought and were not made up by myself.

    Any other ideas?

If that's the model number(rather then WNDR4300), then nope.

Apologies, my typo...it is the 4300 one. The ASUS RT-AC1200 should handle it with no problems neither...

When connected to your own router, check what speed rating your nic is connecting at. If it's anything other than 1Gb/s you have a configuration problem.

Already explained to you, the AC1200 can do <100Mb. End of. Its a silly product, like a coach that only has one seat.

4300 is the only candidate that may work.

    1. Are you using a crossed or straight cable?
    2. Have you tried:
Try checking the Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection box (under Advanced WAN setup).

Looks like a Virgin issue to me...last night around 10:00 pm I got my 230Mbps after my router on my desktop PC, this morning at 07:00 am I tried again for the sake of it and could not even get more than 50Mbps...in the early morning! I also checked the Disable Port Scan was disabled and I have no option for DoS protection...really really weird?
