BMW - Step Auto versus DCT

    Quick technical question please

Currently looking at buying a 520D and notice that all Irish ads just state "auto" for transmission type, so presumably dual clutch etc.

For price comparison purposes in terms of whether importing one myself from the UK might work out cheaper, started looking at UK dealer sites and they quote "Step Auto" which seems to be diff. to DCT

So question is, are Irish dealers being lazy in their descriptions, or are BMWs sold into the UK market somewhat different in this respect compared to what is made available to the Irish market ?

    Confused !

DCT is only on the M cars as far as I know. The diesels will be the 8 speed ZF box.

All automatic BMWs with correct (rear) wheel drive use 8 speed ZF autos, apart from the M2, M3, M4 and M5, which use double clutch gearboxes (although only the ///M5 has it as standard, the rest have a proper manual gearbox as standard). The M Performance stuff use the ZF auto, while the only non ///M car to have the DCT box was the Z4 sDrive35is (which had that box fitted as standard).

The wrong wheel drive rubbish, the Mini and the i8 use Aisin gearboxes, with either 6 or 8 speeds depending on engine (three cylinder engines have six speed boxes, the four bangers use the eight speed Aisin gearbox).

As the saying goes, you should never assume anything!

They are standard auto torque converters not Dual clutches.

Many descriptions will include "Step" or "TipTronic" (or "TripTronic" )to signify that it allows you to also manually select gears + -

Either way, they are the same gearbox in the UK and in Ireland.

There are 2 versions of the box - the standard 8 speed auto and the "Sports" version with paddles on the wheel.

The gearbox is the same. It is just the additional controller to the gearbox ECU.
