Replacing chain- how many links

Looking at a chain on the mower (it drives the conditioner) which I am going to buy a spare of in case it breaks.

It currently has 40 links and one half link. Would it be normal again to have 40 links and the half joiner or would it more than likely when new have been just 40 links?

Finally would it be better when buying the chain to buy it with a link or two extra on it at the time and then cut off one at a time until it fits or just buy the same as was on it?

The mower is old hence having to probably getting some machinery place to cut it off a role of chain. Its 60 chain.

Dunno about mowers but with the diet feeder it was as cheap to buy a new chain as it was to buy a couple of links for it. New chain should last a good bit

If there's a tensioner sprocket on the chain then replace with the same, if not get an extra link or two plus a joiner.

Half links are the weakest part of a chain so the manufacturer may have not fitted the half link.

Sometimes with old worn chains it just trial and error to find what fits best.

Get a few extra, if there's a half link it's possible it was split to remove a link or 2 after it had stretched a bit. A few extra links won't be much anyways
