Where to buy HD's

Looking to buy some HD's for a sonology box (4 bay) as it has 4 x 1 GB already and one is failing so not sure if I should replace all or just one?

Where is best place to buy (looking for value for money drives).

I have a synology 412+ ruining 4 x 6tb Western Digital Red drives.

Best price at the time of purchasing for the NAS and drives.

It doesn't hurt either that they have great customer support.

Current £/€ rate is very favourable to Amazon UK purchases. Helps a bit.


Replacing drives will be a little slow with data in situ as it will need to rebuild after each change. Depending on the mode you chose when you set it up there may be limitations on expansion.

As its a 4 bay you should be choosing storage drives not regular consumer/desktop.

If your array is currently 4TB (3TB usable) RAID 5 you should be starting fresh really and going to a RAID6 equivalent as RAID5 is not suitable at all for large disks.

Ironwolf drives also look like a great option. Haven't used them yet, but I plan to for my next expansion phase. Ironwolf Pros are a little more expensive than the Reds, but they come with a 5-year warranty (vs. the Red's 3).

I have considered getting an 8TB HDD down the line since my mini build only had room for 1 SSD and 1 HDD (plus an m.2) and I store a tonne of media on it, have been curious about the advantages of IronWolf ones if anyone can help?

8TB one going for £230 (€255) at the moment, which is a pretty excellent price for that size, as is £111 (€123) for 4TB.
