Rent relief tax refund

    Hi folks,

I'm looking to apply for a tax refund for the rent I've paid since 2010. I've been renting continuously since August 2010 so I'm entitled to it and want to get it done before it's phased out.

Question: On Citizen's Information there's a list of the maximum amounts you can get a refund for per year.

According to the example under the table, as a single person, for 2016 the maximum amount is €400 and I can get 20% of that back i.e. €80. The question is - is this for the whole year or per month of that year? €80 for the whole year sounds a bit rubbish!

It's €80 credit for the full year of 2016.

The amount of relief available has been reducing over the past few years, so you can claim €120 for 2015, €160 for 2014 and €200 for 2013.

You can only claim a tax refund for the 4 years prior to 2017, so you'll get nothing for the years before 2013.

Sort of related question, I changed circumstances (bought a house and still have rent relief credit for 2017. How can I remove it? Do I need to contact revenue directly?

I would contact revenue directly because there is the possibility that if you have been receiving this tax credit in 2017 that you may be entitled to it for full tax year regardless of change in circumstances during the year .
