Want to change the alloys on my VW from standard to something nicer was thinking along the lines of an 18 inch santiago .. rang one alloy place about it and he said an 18 inch alloy would be far too big for a VW golf 1.6 he said it would be too hard on the car hard on the clutch gear box and engine he said he would be trying to keep it as close to 15 as possible. He said 17 inch wouldn't be much better what would ye reckon ... Also having bother finding alloy places to compare prices I've only got prices off 2 alloy shops based in Midlands but will travel who have ye dealt with for alloys.. if anyone is selling 17 inch or maybe 18 inch santiago or vancouver let us know thanks

18's will be grand on it. I'd strongly recommend getting clean used oem Alloys as theyll be relatively cheap and much stronger than reps which is what most alloy places will be selling.

Out of the 2 types you've named above I'd go for the Vancouvers they're a clean elegant design and look well without being over the top.

Done deal or adverts probably best search the entire parts section instead of just the alloy section.

Factory wheels will have a vw part number stamped on them and in general they'll be made in Germany.

Reps are heavier and made out of lower quality materials. They tend to crack and buckle easier than factory wheels too.

16s and 17s are common fitment on golfs, so they wouldn't be an issue. Obviously 18s will be harder on the road, tyres will be mega bucks too and you'll find it very easy to damage them.

I'm not confident that there are loads of genuine 18" VW wheels out there, there will be way more reps around.

Personally I wouldn't go bigger than 17, but it's down to what you want the car to be.

Try fk performance too, they have a good selection. With bigger alloys, the gap in the arch will start to look excessive. Vancouvers are a lovely wheel, I have them in 18s on my golf, although there is a slightly lowered suspension on that to make it look sleeker.

They've got some nice 18" Audi wheels there. Wonder are they the same fitment. €375 is good I think.

It depends on the model of Golf you have. Is it a very standard spec / Comfortline spec? If so, its most likely on standard springs, a "high" ride height and 18's will look stupid on it. If its a "sport" line or similar, it may already be lowered a tad, ala the GTI and 18's will look fine.

The MK6 shape Golf is well able to take an 18" rim without looking silly so long as the suspension height matches.
