Large span lintel: types vs cost

Not looking for any structural advice or info just product options

Was pricing the catnic lintels and was quite surprised at the cost for 4m plus sized lintel for 150mm cavity; approx 2k sterling per support ( have 5 of these spans in my build )

Just want to get some thought on alternative options like using rsj's eg. what other members used in their build for large opes. no structural info being asked as this is up to my engineer.

    Thanks

I used 101mm x 205mm x 23 RSJ's over bay windows in my house, galvanised, with 25 x 50 timbers hilti'd on, covered with ply and expanded metal, easy to plaster over.

The size of the steel needs to be specced by a structural engineer. It is possible that this steel wouldn't be suitable for the span/loading involved

Precast lintels are out at that span.

Options are proprietary steel lintels or designed steel beams. I've specified beams before and was met with "where are ye goin with that?! Why cant we use a steel lintel"..... on another job I then specified a steel lintel and was met with "ah it'd be cheaper for me to get a couple of beams! Those lintels are mad money!"

So the answer is, both are fine (once designed), both will be relatively expensive, and the builder won't be happy with either!

You could probably apply this sentence to most elements of house construction!
