Grindhouse played this one before a recent screening and it got more laughs than the film.

The Prodigy's Charly was based on a character in a series of these.

I remember the first one when I was a kid and it was current and it gave the the heebie jeebies. Donald Pleasance did the voiceover and creepy as fook was his voice.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

A few more that popped into my head.

That very scary woman who gives out to her daughter for standing too close to the fireplace. "Kid's, wouldn't ye die if anything happened to them?"

One with POV shots of small children pulling pans of boiling water down on top of themselves from the cooker, followed by a scream.

Drink driving advert that juxtaposed a shotgun being loaded and fired with a pedestrian being mowed down by a speeding car down a dark country road. Ended with shotgun sliding down a bar counter and knocking over a load of pints.

One on wearing earplugs at work where this fella finishes his factory shift and goes to a pub where the camera zooms in on a standup comedian and we hear what yer man is hearing, an incomprehensible high pitched squeaking.

There was one in particular I was terrified of as a child. Jt ended with a doll's face melting. I think it was a fire safety ad. I'd always hide when the ads were on in the evenings for a time just to avoid it. Would have been late 80s, early 90s.

I can't think of much in the line of public safety ads in more recent years (well since the 90s). The 70s and 80s ones couldn't be outdone in the scary stakes. I don't know what it was about them that made them so especially scary looking - maybe it was the dreariness of everything.

The little boys drowning in the paddling pool and barrel haunted me. Probably caused a generation to be afraid of water. The kid climbing up on the pylon was another iconic one.

The stern woman in the ad about the danger of standing too close to the fire or gas heater was also the actress who played the witch in Fortycoats.

The most terrifying of all (don't think it got aired ultimately) was the Protect & Survive series of info films in the UK... on what to do if there was a nuclear attack.

YouTube it - it's on another level of frightening!
