    Hi Guys,

I had a bet today on Medieval @Goodwood 3:50 on my betslip it says it pays EW 1/4 1,2,3,4 it came 4th. They have refused to pay out as they say they will only pay top 3, I have 2 friends who backed with Bet365 & Skybet who were also paying top 4 and they paid out no issue. Anyone come across this before? The thing is I'm pretty sure no more horses pulled out after I put my bet on, 12 horses went to post.

That question should be addressed to the gambling forum.
The answer is the race was a handicap.
They pay 4 places in a handicap of 16 or more runners.
8 runners were withdrawn by their connections because of unsuitable ground.
12 runners ran in the race, and they pay 3 places when there are 12 runners.
Your horse finished 4th. They do not pay for 4th.

I copied this from a bookmaker website

Handicaps of more than 16 runners - 1/4 odds on first four places. ... I'm sure they mean 16 or more runners.
Handicaps of 12-15 runners - 1/4 odds on first three places.
All other races of more than 8 runners - 1/5 odds on first three places.
All races of 5-7 runners - 1/4 odds on first two places.
All races of less than 5 runners - place money goes on to win.

I does not matter how many runners were in the race when you placed your bet.
It is the number of runners that raced that decide how many places are paid.
Anyone who bets should know the basics.

    Skybet

    Handicap Races
    2 - 4 Runners: Win Only (1st place only)
    5 - 7 Runners: A 1/4 the odds over 2 places (1st and 2nd place)
    8 - 11 Runners: A 1/5th the odds over 3 places (1st, 2nd and 3rd place)
    12 - 15 Runners: A 1/4 the odds over 3 places (1st, 2nd and 3rd place)
    16 or more Runners: A 1/4 the odds over 4 places (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place)

Each-Way bets are governed by our S.P. place betting terms. This means that the place terms (1/4, 1/5 and number of places paid) will be determined by the number of horses coming 'under starter's orders' and not by the number of declared runners when the price was taken. In the event of a promotional extra place concession, Sky Bet reserve the right to change the fractional place terms.

    Bet365

    Each-Way Betting

Bets are settled to win unless Each-way is selected. An Each-way bet is a bet of twice the selected unit stake. It contains one bet of unit stake on the selection to Win and one bet of unit stake on the selection to be Placed according to the terms advertised for the event. In general, for UK horse racing the Place part of Each-way bets will be settled as per the following Place terms:

Handicaps of 16 or more runners, one quarter the odds, first four places.
Handicaps of 12 to 15 runners, one quarter the odds, first three places.
All other races of 8 or more runners, one fifth the odds, first three places.
Races of 5, 6 or 7 runners, one quarter the odds, first two places.
Less than 5 runner, the place money is invested to Win.

In all races the number of runners shall be the number of runners coming under starters orders. Bets will not be accepted where the Place stake exceeds the Win stake. Each-way doubles, trebles and accumulators will be settled Win to Win and Place to Place in accordance with the above.
