06 Petrol 1.6 Jetta Failed NCT Emissions

Don't want to waste money on this car and looking for some advice on how to proceed at best cost.

    NCT failed today

    Engine Oil Temp 91deg

Low Idle 690rpm, CO 0.03 vol% (fail is above 0.30%
    HC 19ppm

High Idle 3010rpm, Lambda 0.96 (range says between 0.97 and 1.03) FAIL
CO 1.32vol% (range is above 0.20) FAIL
    HC 81ppm

Can anyone tell me where to proceed with this. My usual garage said they done't have a calibrated emissions tester and I'm sure VW will charge a fortune to diagnose. No warning lights. Thanks in advance folks

Your CO is miles out but that may be because of the lambda sensor which may need replacing. If that doesn't work then you most likely need a new cat.

Would imagine vw won't charge much just to put on computer

Dealer diagnostic charges can be quite high, but they are usually deducted from the repair bill if the subsequent repairs are carried out by them.

High CO with low lambda at high idle only could simply indicate that the air filter needs replacing - how recently was the car serviced? A problem with the cat will give high CO with normal lambda, so diagnose the low lambda value before considering replacing the cat!

    Independent garage with emmissions testing

You can be going round in circles with emmissions

Check sparks, air filter, map sensor, air temperature sensor.

That garage seems full of anarchists...

go to halfords, buy a bottle of dipetane, fill a quarter of of a tank with petrol, **** the whole bottle of dipetane into the tank, drive around for 30 mins before test and it will pass

You'd want to also be checking plugs, air filter and exhaust leaks if you're going to try getting it through without diagnostics and emmissions

Or you'll end up going back a few times

If that fails you'll need a garage that can test the emmissions going out the door

    Passed this morning

Oil Temp reduced from 91deg to 19deg
On high idle CO2 was 1.32%vol and now 0.02vol%. Tolerance based on year was 0.20%vol so well passed

    Thanks to Dipethene

Oil temp was reduced because you kept it outside of the NCT for a few hours, didn't you?! ;)

You should have done the lot together if you were trying to wing it without diagnostics

I doubt that dipetane did it myself
