Living Wage vs Minimum Wage

Hi, I was wondering if someone could clarify something for me re the Living Wage vs the Minimum wage.

A friend of mine has been a recruitment consultant for a well-known recruitment agency for 4 years and he tells me he's still on 10 euro per hour... and that even after the Living Wage has increased to 11.70 per hour, they still did not give him a better salary.

If this is true, can the employer get away with paying below the Living Wage?

    Thanks.

Yes; living wage is not mandatory. Minimum wage is.

He's been working for that agency for 3 years now... is there anything he can do? Isnt that discrimination, because salaries per hour for this kind of job range from 12 to 14 euro per hour and thats for those with less than 3 years experience. Would it be worth his time taking this up with Rights Commisioner. He is not well, feels like crap, I just wish I could help him. He cannot afford to resign but they wont make him redundnatn eitehr, which makes me think they value him somehow...

    Thats discrimination!
The hourly rate of a recruitment consultant with 3 years experience is at least 13.5 euro. Just google it. If he can’t afford to resign, he shud definitely seek legal advice!

You literally have no idea what you're talking about.
Company only has to pay min wage.
The living wage was calculated in some study to give a figure for what people need to earn for a certain standard of living.

Tell your friend look for a new job, or ask for a raise

So, there’s no law? I think it’s discriminatory too. I just googled it and the poster is right, it’s all over the net. Of course he can try find another job but that doesn’t mean this is not discrimination. Suppose all your colleagues get substantially more than u per hour. Would you not say you were being discriminated?

What's discriminatory about it? Companies will pay
1: what they think your worth
    +
2: what they can get away with.

If he's been doing the same job for 3 years and is any way competent he should be able to move on for more money. The biggest pay rises I ever got were when I switched companies.

Yeah ur friend shud be ashamed of himself tell him to grow a pair and get a new job!
no, there’s no law it’s a jungle, now u know, employers get away with murder and noting can b done, that’s why so many are unemployed and lads take their own lives in this country - if he’s feeling like crap it’s his own fault for being a mug as shteno so rightly points out with great sensitivity

You do know we are close to full employment and the rate of suicide has declined in recent years?

Aldi or Lidl would pay him the Living wage.

Maybe your friend likes the agency and the role he does and that's worth a lot, but it's up to him to manage his career and find a job that pays him what he's worth. Maybe he's giving you his rate before commission, couldn't believe that any professional would work for so little.

Well if he's still in a job after 3 years he must be reasonably good at it, so he's likely earning commission, pushing up his hourly wage.

But, not to be smart, he's an experienced recruitment consultant, what's stopping him just getting a different job??

Just earning the min wage after 3 years, would hardly qualify as a career.
