Looking at the above, both 2015/16 are around the same money and both tick all the boxes re performance and economy. The 2.0 was quicker but the 1.6 was good too. The 2.0 felt that bit smoother.

Just wondering does either unit have a better reputation re reliabiltiy, egr, dmf and so on than the other? Neither engine is effected by diesel gate.

    Cheers.

I'd go for the 2.0 it has a lot more power and is a much nicer drive than the 1.6 which feels a bit weedy. Egr can be troublesome on both engines but is an easier fix on the 2 litre.

Do you really think anyone in this forum is going to tell you to go for the small engine?

The automatic gearbox paired with the 2.0 (DQ250) is much better than the one in 1.6 (DQ200).

Well if it was a golf I would say 1.6 but since its a passat and heavier then the 2.0 would be my recommendation :P

I suppose it really depends on your prospective and what you are coming from. I had a quick test drive in a cousin's brand new 1.6 Passat manual recently. Nicely finished on the inside but I found the 1.6 engine frustratingly lacking acceleration. If you needed to make a quick overtaking maneuver then forget it. My own car is no rocket ship but the 1.6 Passat would just drive me nuts.

As others have said, the 1.6 is a bit of a plodder and dull as mud to drive but in fairness it's not a bad engine if you're not interested in having a little poke available. 2.0 is much nicer and still economic. 2.0 DSG is even nicer still.

Another option has presented itself, 1.4Tsi ACT 148bhp DSG, now we are talking.

That's what I have in my Audi A4 now and I'd never consider diesel after having this motor. Smooth, quiet and pretty economic as well. Look no further.

I have that engine in my golf but it's paired with a manual gearbox. I'm getting an average of 40mpg, but I have a heavy right foot. As mentioned it's smooth and quiet.

Now that's the job. I've the 122 non act DSG in a Skoda Octavia and I love it. Plenty of poke when needed and very economical too.
