Looking to try out VR but my 4yr old 7950 obviously wont cut it so im looking to upgrade to something that will last for another few years. GPUs seem to be all over the place atm because of the miners so im thinking of skipping the 1070 and going for a 1080 as they dont seem to be affected yet. Had a look at the RX Vega aswell but dont think theres any point waiting for it. or am I wrong?

Havnt really been keeping up with the prices on 1080s or the aftermarket sellers so if someone could point me in the right direction Id appreciate it. Im considering this one:
    https://eu.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=08G-P4-6181-KR

Rest of the specs are an i5 3570k, P8Z77-V Board and 600W PSU (Will this still be enough?)

    Thanks

My 2c, if you can wait till after the 14th Aug do. This is the AMD Vega launch date and even if you dont want one of those it might and I stress might get NVIDEA to reduce the price of the 1080 cards.

If the Vega card gets massively better in 2 weeks due to driver updates and AMD turning on all the features you have another choice. The 1080 is a fine card and can be found on amazon for 500stg atm which is 50stg more than some of the 1070's.

Thanks, yeah I have been watching the launch but i have ordered the rift while its on sale and itll be here friday so was hoping to have a new card this week or early next week.

I suppose I could wait till the 14th but Im not really convinced itll be that much better than the 1080 or that much cheaper, and even then they could all be snapped up really quickly. I cant imagine NVIDEA dropping the price before September at the earliest. What do you think a price drop would be based on past launches? 50€? 100€? Do you know what price the VEGA 64 will be here when its released?

I probably will just wait and see.

In that case, go order a new card now and be done with it. No point letting the Rift sit there bored. :)
I think the Vega will be similar to a 1080 and a little bit cheaper but Nivdea might drop the prices of the 1080's in line to pressure the vega cards. Might not happen at all so in your case, go ahead and enjoy the Rift.

Why would Nvidia drop the price of the 1080?
They already did so in March.

I was thinking (perhaps wishfully) that with a direct competition to the 1080 that that would trigger a price cut.

It might be wishful thinking but am holding off getting a 1080 myself to see.

It's not really direct competition though. It's clearly inferior, even AMD's best slides have it slower than a GTX1080 in selected titles despite guzzling power. We can talk about drivers and the future all day but Vega is what it is right now.

Nvidia don't really have much to worry about. AMD's brand new flagship needs to drink power to even come close to toppling a card that's already been on the market for almost 15 months and new cards are around the corner.

AMD themselves couldn't even bring themselves to hype the card at all. They knew they had a serious problem on their hands and have done for quite a long time now.

Very true. The card has great compute and is just a little bit slower than the $5000 Quadro P6000; but despite all that none of the performance and TFLOP count translates to games at all it seems.

12+ TFLOP card barely able to match the GTX 1080; despite the die being as large at GP102/TitanXp/Quadro P6000.

Then add in the horrific power consumption and it's clear something went wrong somewhere down the line.

    350+W to compete against a reference 180W GTX 1080.

GCN is amazing and the compute power is a understatement. Their is a rumour that pipeline optimisations could net a hash rate of 100 off the card.

But the problem with GCN is that the work has always been lumped on the engine designers and game developers, which seems to be a bad idea as they don't bother.

Aye, GCN has all the hardware but need developers to put in effort. That rarely happens.

Although idSoftware have done a fantastic job with DOOM. With Wolfenstein 2 they're using Vulkan again, and even going to leverage FP16 to increase performance.

That's a big plus for Vega, since it means top Vega has 25 TFLOPs of FP16 compute; where as GeForce cards have it cut down to 1/64 speed. Vega has 2/1 FPS speeds with Rapid Packed Math.

The top card is 300w. Still high but not as high as people are claiming. The board supports 375w for overclocking.

I suspect that a tiny bit of undervolting will bring this down, in a similar fashion to what was suggested for R9 fury cards (Which are not a million miles dissimilar at all)
