I did a search of 3D printing on boards just now and the results were years old.

Is there no small corner of boards where this topic is discussed ? You even have a group for mustard lovers ffs

You're better off with Facebook groups or the Thingiverse forums. There's not much of a community here.

Not sure if you're joking or not but it's a bit more advanced than that:

Aren't these a lathe more than a printer?

A lathe if for cutting - these deposit layers of plastic.

It's probably more like the opposite of a lathe. With a lathe you cut the design from a solid piece of material. With a 3d printer you make the design using layers of material starting from scratch.

Local school has one in engineering room. They use plastic to print small objects.

I have two in my house at the moment. They're really handy for printing brackets or hinges for everyday stuff and fixing bits around the house. There's also oodles of cool designs on thingiverse.

Cost isn't a big issue any more. You can get a decent reliable printer for under 800 euro and one that just about works for around 150.

The big stumbling block is designing components. If you don't know how to create CAD models of the stuff you want and you can't find it online then you're stuck.

I'm gonna start printing this tomorrow. Should cost less than 2 euro in filament.

you can have a new knee 3D printed based on scans of your knee, or other bones that need replacing

they are planning on using 3D printers to build houses using robots to lay the concrete

you can use a 3D printer to print out the components of a gun and assemble them which is turning into a problem at the moment

I'm using mine to print 3d bank notes. Easy money.

They use the Boards 3D printer to print mustard, of course. That's why the rest of us don't get a look in. Not that I'd trust AH with a 3D printer.

Wouldn't be into it as such

But in my last job, they got a lend of a special main dealer tool and got two copies printed (??) And they seemed to work perfect after it,saving the boss like 2000euro

One of the lads in the Gaming forums does 3d printing, I think he has a thread in Arcade & Retro section.

Soon people won't bother with 2D printers anymore and they'll go out of fashion. They'll just 3D print a flexible sheet with the text made out of a different colour material

Or perhaps instead of printing a photo and framing it and hanging it on the wall the whole thing will be printed as one unit complete with frame. The only thing that will be separate is the nail to hang it. They can print metal now so if you don't have a nail you'd be able to print one.

The only thing they havn't cracked yet is how to print a wooden handle for the hammer you use to drive the nail.

    Doubtful.
People said the same about books 15 years ago when computers took off.

I like the idea, but for now the affordable end of 3D printing means waiting an age for simple things to be created, never mind a load of parts for some bigger project.

You spend 3 or 4 hundred on what amounts to a few sporks and some army men, or perhaps a pieced together water pistol of some kind, even though you didn't really want one. What would be really exciting would be when 3D printing becomes advanced enough at the consumer level to print quickly, using more than one type of plastic, and perhaps even metal as well. The other big advancement would be being able to print things in larger sizes. At that point, homes with these printers would become little factories unto themselves, and a lot would change in the world of commerce.

If your 3D printer could extrude glue then you could potentially print a ready-bound book out of plastic pages. It would also save you the trouble of printing a hammer and nail if you could just print a patch of glue on the back of your framed picture

    That's the plan!
Got a leaky tap? Print the replacement part.
Lost the back of your TV remote? Print the replacement part.

Can't get your hands on the latest toy/gadget/fidget spinner? Print it!
