    Alright folks,

Long time listener first time caller... (Now that's outta the way)

Working on getting my first car and was planning on looking at a couple of 407's tomorrow which seem to work out more preferable on insurance quotes than polos, micras and fiestas.

Just wondering if anyone can advise on any regular issues with'em to look out for? Tried looking up a few sites on Google, but most feedback is on the diesel engines as opposed to petrol I'll be looking at. (Avg journey per day will be up to 13k).

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

In the grand scheme of things, the engine is probably pretty bullet proof.

In the 407, the engine is the least of your concerns!

Check the heater blows hot and cold air, and the air con works. Make sure to turn the radio on during the day and with hot air running. Some cars have an issued where the head unit/radio display screen fades to black with any amount of heat on it.

407 are a front-heavy car, routine/wear and tear bits and pieces will wear out faster on a 407 (ball joints, etc).

If it has the tyre pressure sensor make sure it works properly. A lot of these give issues.

Sorry, my post above (I just re-read it back) sounds very negative.

You can be hit with a lot of electrical toruble on a 407. I had one and it acted up constantly. I never wanted to kick the shite out of a car so much. But a friend had one and other than the heater breaking and only blowing cold air, he never had any trouble with it.

Assuming you're okay with electrical issues, the car as a whole is good. 407 is a lazy, comfortable car. It eats up potholes and feels smooth and luxurious to drive. They're usually pretty well specc'ed for what they are, and are a stylish enough car, too. I loved my one appearance-wise. I think they're a sexy car.

And again, can't stress how comfortable I find them.

Mine was black, had the upgraded alloys and had the spoiler on the boot. I thought it looked really well. But to each their own:

Cheers man, if needed I can follow a wire. Good feedback regarding looking over the front. Always thought they were a great looking car too.

I bought one 1.5 years ago 06 model with really low mileage (below 100k km). Purchase cost was pretty much negligible (just over €1000 afair)

We use it as a second car in the family, so no big mileage (maybe 10k km per year).

Over that 1.5 year, car broke down once and left me stranded in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere (very rural place). Mechanic took few days and €100. Culprit was blown relay in fusebox, which can not be changed (soldered into board) so whole fusebox had to be replaced.
Also when changing tyres, valve just cracked and had to be removed together with tyre pressure sensor which later caused error message on display. I eventually got diagnostics interface to disable it so I don't use TPMS anymore. (AFAIR error message from TPMS is NCT fail).

Except from the above, car is working great, is very comfy and provides nice cruising comfort by which I mean that it's nice for gentle driving, with suspension absorbing all potholes and bumps very efficiently, and you have a premium car feel when inside either as driver or passenger. Engine is rather on sluggish side so definitely not good for fast driving. Provides basic reasonable power, but overtaking might be tricky sometimes.
Fuel consumption around 9 litres/100km in mixture of small town and rural driving.

So in short, it's a extremely cheap car to buy which provides excellent comfort and ride quality, good safety, and premium feel, but might lack in reliability (especially silly things like electrics, etc) and performance.

The car I looked at seemed to suffer from that display unit issue. But I'm not too concerned with that. ABS sensor needs a look at, other than that it was fine to drive and nothing creeping up from a motor check report. So waiting to hear back from them on it tomorrow.

I think a chap in kildare, near athy, fixed my display for about €130 or so. He was on adverts.

Check the heater is blowing hot and cold, though! that's the megabucks problem (€700+ from dealer, or €300+ independently).
