I have eir FTTH and decided to switch to a netgear R7000 nighthawk for better wireless and its top notch. BUT now my download speeds have halved after about 5 days. was 945 now 487:

How would it work at all in bridge mode? I assume you've only one router?

no two routers, f2000 from eir and a new netgear r7000

Bridging with VDSL/ADSL makes sense as you change the modem, in this case the modem(ONT) is fixed. Bridging is diagnostically useless tbh.

Most likely its a feature on the R7000 thats tanking WAN to LAN. Firewall/SPI/QoS. Most connections are sub 500Mb so wouldnt normally notice.

ok i'll contact netgear. The surprising thing now is I cant get back in the f2000 ie the normal ip address wont allow me access. I think if I reset it looses bridging. I did a reset with paperclip and that reset everything.

Just an update, this R7000 cant cope with fast speeds!! Up to 500mb is ok. I cant figure why it worked ok for a week and then halved speed. I am getting a refund.

Is there any router that will cope as well as the F2000? I dislike the interface on the F2000 and the restrictions eg dhcp reservations.

It should work. Its been benchmarked up to gig.

    Have you the latest firmware?

Have you something enabled that could be causing extra CPU usage? QOS or bandwidth limiting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,679 ✭✭✭swoofer

Yes it has latest firmware, and yes I have switched off everything that I can find that may be causing a blip but note first post, it worked perfect for about 5 days and out of the blue it halved speed.

Dont worry its going back and I get money back. I like netgear so that was reason I got r7000 but its not the best. It may just be this particular one but I am going to look at something else. Synology have a good one but none of the specs you read on any router actually state they can handle ftth speeds or I have not noticed yet. Netgear have recommended this one

    "NETGEAR R8000P-100EUS Nighthawk X6S AC4000 Tri-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router with MU-MIMO" Just released.

Wouldn't choose syn myself. Maybe get a mikrotik.

Not sure if any of the all in one integrated Mikrotik routers can handle gigabit NAT, maybe the Hap AC with no vlans and very few filters or rules. If it were me I'd opt for a two devices solution using an RB3011 as router and a Wap AC access point (or two) for dual band Wi-Fi.

I already have 2x Wap AC setup myself using the Mikrotik Capsman controller running on a CRS125 I use as router (efibre so it's fine). The RB3011 is my next upgrade :)
