Is it free to leave a car park with barriers within a few minutes?

    Question about parking.

If you go into a car park with barriers and circle around and go out again because there are no spaces, is this generally free and you can use the same ticket going out again? Or do you have to go to the machine and pay?

You can usually drive out with the ticket un-validated within a small grace period. Or, around here you can anyway.

Have you not tried checking the UN convention on Human Rights for the definite, indisputable, answer?

And what sort of "paleo" person drove a car in all and anyways? Fred Flintstone?

In my experience if you leave within few minutes there is no charge. But if there is no spaces, usually the barrier wont even rises.,

Yes! I only found this out a few weeks ago. It was put to the test in the Quays car park in Galway. I'm not sure of the time but I believe it to be 10/15 minutes you have to leave.

It all depends where. I got stung at Leeds airport for exactly this when returning a rental car. Drove into the wrong section of the car park for approx 1 minute and was expected to pay to exit.

Would have you gone into a pickup/dropoff section. More airports are starting to do this, Belfast International is one of them over here.

It varies depending on the carpark, but generally I think you have about 10 minutes.

    I hope you didn't pay.

I think most places have like ten minutes or so, in case you change your mind after entering the car park.

Got caught out in Portugal once like that, and no amount of shouting in English at the Portuguese person at the end of the intercom would persuade him to let me out :D

Generally there are loads or T&Cs when you enter a paid car park here. The ten minute grace period allows you to read the board at the entrance to the car park and reject them if you want. Otherwise you could say you were forced to accept them and they wouldn't be binding in law.

Happened me before, first ten minutes were free but I needed to validate the ticket in the machine before it would let me out...

The trick is to put the terms and conditions outside the car park.

Was up in Dublin last week and the car park was full. Went back to barrier and accepting ticket with no charge.

If you can read this, you're too close!

But thankfully, not too many charge for Pickup/Dropoff yet. Two mentioned in this thread, the exception so far that I know of.

Steve Buscemi in Fargo had to pay. He wasn't happy about it though.

I saw car parks allowing the first 10=20 minutes free.

I had rented a car and was told to leave it back to the rental site at the airport. Drove into the designated rental drop off area and was told that the car was from a different rental company that operated just off the actual airport site. Pressed the intercom.bitton at the gate and they wanted payment by credit card before they'd open the barrier.

I waited for the next car to go through the barrier and followed it out quick as I could.

Cork puts no parking signs up so you have to go into the car park
