    Hi,

    Here's a situation:
So i've decided to get my first car and checked this 2007 Toyota Yaris T2 today, UK import, irish registration number, 130k km, in good condition, did a test drive, NCT untill Jun-2018, all good, it's been insured with Liberties Insurance previously (till June-2017). All seemed great so I said to seller i will think about and get back to you asap.

I came home and did Motorcheck online report just to be safe, everything good except it has ''UK Write-off; Category C on Dec-2015''. Also car was imported to Ireland in June 2016. Since this is my first purchase, not sure if this is a serious problem or not.

What are your opinions on this? Considering that this car has valid NCT, irish reg numbers, that it was insured by insurance company, do you guys think i will be ok if i go ahead and purchase it?

Also, i did online quote from AXA for this car and it came at 3300 euro :D:eek:

    Thank you

I'd avoid. It usually means it's been fixed on the cheap

Best first step before you make any decision would be contact your insurer to see they will actually cover the car, if they won't it's game over straight away, some blacklist cars. I'd be looking for at least a 20% discount on it compared to a car with no CAT C write off history.

    Thank you,

Would you still check with insurer even if the car was insured previously? Previously it was insured with Liberty Insurance till June 2017. THat's why im confused because it has valid NCT and it was insured before...

Unless he's selling it a fair bit cheaper then what its usually going for I'd walk away

Yes, it could be possible no check was done last time around or that systems have now been updated. If you can't insure it the car will be near worthless.

Why buy a car that's been written off when you can get one that hasn't been. It's a buyers market, no need to settle for something that might cause issues.

Very general statement there. Might have just been worth it to the insurance company to write it off. The airbags may have gone off and it could be as simple as that on a 10 year old Yaris it could easily be that.

You'd want the specific details of the damage OP. Find out who the insurance company was and ask them.

There's plenty more Yaris' in the sea though. So to speak.

It's more than likely 130,000 miles as well as opposed to km, even if the speedo is set to km the odometer would be miles.

C and D write-offs are based on market value of the car, not the actual damage.
I would not cross it out, but it needs to be checked for bodywork damage. To make a write-off on a 2007 car you need to break a headlight and a bumper...

Nevertheless, as pointed out already, it is possible to buy one without an write-off indication. Plenty of them around.

In most Toyotas its the other way around, the speedo will be in MPH but you can toggle between KMs and Miles on the odometer.

In a 2004 yaris the setting for odometer and speedo are independent and can be set either way. Not sure if that's the same in the one OP is reviewing.

Would I buy a car that has been crashed and repaired? Maybe, depends on the circumstances.

Would I buy it from someone who didn't tell me about it when they had a chance? Hell no, I'd run away as fast as I can. If the seller isn't telling me right away that he's selling a car that had substantial repairs carried out, I wouldn't believe a single word that came out of his mouth. And that's not a basis to exchange a 4 digit amount of money.

Are you thinking of the trip computer?

Odometer will always be in miles on a uk Yaris or an Irish one that came before the km switchover. You can change the units for the speedo or the trip computer, but the odometer will stay the same.

Maybe. I recall once my aunt accidentally had her speedo set to miles and when going through settings i thought I had switched both over.
