I'll be going to claremorris Next Week, is the google maps route the best way.

Not mad about going long distances on single lane roads, but don't think there's a motorway the full route.

Head for Athlone,Roscommon,Castlerea and finally Ballyhaunis before you finally hit Claremorris.

M4/M6 to Athlone then N61/N60 to Ballyhaunis

Is it a tough drive, wife and two kids under five.

    You could get a train.

If driving, take turns and/or take breaks.

I've probably done it a 100 times with same but they're good travellers thankfully. Just make sure you've a disney CD or 20.

    Athlone route is my preferred.

I'm here now a few days, wasn't as bad as I thought, we had a food stop at roscommon.

But done achill island today from east side of claremorris, mother of god thats one drive and a half, there and back!

I never knew it was that populated and popular, we went to keel beach and I can honestly say I was blown always by it's beauty, we had a great time and the weather was Spanish like.

Next year I'd consider a few days stay in westport and a week in achill caravan/camping park.

Haha....people who arent from Mayo have no idea how big a county it is and how bad the roads are.

If you left Blacksod and went to Dublin your journey would take 3 H 55 Mins, of which you would spend 1H and 55M driving just to get out of Mayo (137 K / 318 K)

(Im using Ballaghadereen as the most easterly point of Mayo)

Mayo is indeed a huge county (3rd largest in Ireland after Cork and Galway). It is 141km from Blacksod to the Galway border at the bridge in Shrule.

From November the new M17 motorway opens up south Mayo at least to the south and east. Many south Mayo people will go to Tuam and take the new M17 and link up with the M6 to Dublin. It is a game changer.
