Past employers and references?

    Talking with a friend and was talking about this, can an employer contact previous employers thats on your C.V but not listed as a reference on the C.V.
    I was in the thinking that wasnt allowed.

    I don't know if there is a specific law preventing this, but if you list previous employers and forbid the new employer from contacting them, you might as well write in big red letters "PROBLEM" on your CV.

    Some HR departments will use back channels to communicate with former employers, it really depends on the company, but you will be surprised how in some industries how people from different companies HR departments know each other.
