Immersion heater not wired at all

We've moved into a new place where we have bath and sink switch. There's an over 2 metres tall cylinder behind it. Switch working, immersion not. Started troubleshooting.

Turned out not wired in at all (no wires attached to thermostat and can't find any signs=wires that it was connected at all). Any reason not to connect it?

What would be our other options to get hot water?
(power shower in bath but nothing at sink or kitchen)

    Thanks!

    Hi padyjoe,

not a plumber...but our house is like that and basically the immersion is not used or installed in the tank.

Do you have solar heated water? for our tank, we have the solar loop in the tank and also a coil from the oil heating as
back-up. i.e., no room/need for the immersion, but the switches are wired.

    Hope this helps

Best course of action is to get an electrician in to test everything from the fusebox to the immersion. You must have a REC to connect it up anyway. He might have you up & running in as quick as 30minutes with luck

    Thanks for the replies!
No, I dont have any kind of hot water not even a solar one! I discovered there's a junction box beside the tank that's where the wires would go.
Had the heating on, gives me hot water after a while but heating the radiators too. It's PIA. Yet have to find out how to heat the tank coil only.
Or get a combi boiler. It's a strange setup really.

Is there a thermosrat on a wall anywhere in the house?
In the hot press or at the boiler there may be switches or a lever to shut off the flow to the rads, anything like that visible?
On the pipes in the hot press or under the gas boiler are there any electrical boxes attached?

I think I'm getting there. Yes, thermo on the wall, I left it all the way down, boiler switched on, have my usual sink/bath switch(it seems to be wired into whether a diverter valve or a pump) and opened the valve on the coil side. I have warm water now.

Hopefully this is a right setup I'm using. Never had this before.

When you are having the boiler serviced and safety checked, have the tech demonstrate how the heating controls work and how to get the best from your system.
If you have only just moved in I would advise to have it done sooner rather than later to ensure its safe and ready for use coming into the colder months.
