Amazon charging on dispatch

Have bought a few things from Amazon recently, both directly and 'fulfilled' by them and I have noticed the charge is taken straight away from my card on the last 2 occasions. I had ordered quite a few items before that and none of them were charged until the item was dispatched.

Does it vary? As I always thought Amazon charged only on dispatch, I can almost certainly remember in the last year everything bought from there was charged only on dispatch.

Amazon has always authorised payment cards when orders are placed and then actually taken the authorisation as a charge upon dispatch

They have put a nominal €1 fee for authorisation in the past but lately they have taken the full payment on order of the item. The payment wasn't a sort of 'shadow' charge either, I checked it was full payment taken out.

I ordered last week and item wasn't due for dispatch for 4 days. It didn't get dispatched until 8 days later but the payment came out on the 4th day when it was originally due for dispatch.

It seems that the money is taken out of the account if it says on amazon website, Preparing for dispatch' even though it mightn't actually dispatch until a week later

Noticed this last week, it used to be payment was taken when items were ready to despatch yet my order last week was charged straight away and only despatched yesterday.

Not a big deal if the item is in stock and going to be sent in a day or two.

They don't actually charge you, they just put the authorization/reservation on it. It still takes away from the balance on your bank account so it looks like they've charged you, but they actually haven't. They only still charge on dispatch.

I only just talked to customer support about this very issue last week because I thought they charged me twice for 1 of the items I ordered. Then they explained to me they only charged me once, the other is just a reservation. They told me banks usually remove reservations in 7 - 10 days and that's what happened. A few days later it was removed and my bank balance was updated.

This does explain it alright, however for me it has never happened before until recently. Was never any action on my account until dispatch, when the amount was taken out. No pre authorisation or amount taken out before that until lately.

    I've an order awaiting dispatch

    They haven't taken payment yet

Is there a way to make the payment manually?
