Could any tell me if a spot putty could be applied to small dimples/ dents and profiled without the need to sand afterwards? By small I mean a couple of mm deep and diameter of a pea.

The kind of putty I was looking at is 3M Glaze putty

What exactly are you trying to fill?

Very much depends on the finish you are trying to achieve

I sanded out a couple of rust spots on car door which has left some shallow dents. Standard filler is not very workable in my experience and requires that I lay it proud and sand back to the surrounding body work. I'd rather use a compound that was easy to sculpt and profile before it dried and required no sanding. The finish I'm after is smooth and matches the surrounding body work contours.
