HAP / Rent Allowance

I'm not exactly sure how HAP works and have tried looking up info on it on citizens information but I'm still left with a few questions.

I've recently applied for social housing with DCC but was told I can't do so with my partner as we live at different addresses so he now has to go and make a separate application to mine. It is my understanding that currently as a single individual I am entitled to €660 per month from HAP but if living in shared accommodation I'm entitles to €430 per month, but as a couple we could get €900 per month.

Would it be possible for us both to go down as single individuals and rent a 1 bed apartment, combining our HAP allowance of €430 per month to make €860 per month or would we then be able to apply for HAP as a couple to get €900 per month.

You don't get 900. The 900 refers to the max rent on the place, i.e you must find a place that rents for 900 or less.

You then make a contribution to that 900.

Alternatively, look for a double room for 500 or less in shared accommodation.

I understand I don't personally get the money, it's paid directly to the landlord. I'm not confused about that, what I'm confused about is as we cannot apply as a couple for social housing does this also mean we cannot apply for HAP together?

Also I was unaware of the contribution, I'm guessing this is paid to the council. Would you happen to know how much it is?

It is what is called a differential rent. Google that for the council area you are in and you can read through it. Roughly you pay 20% of your take home, and the council make up the shortfall to bring you to 900. The landlord receives 900. The rent for the place cannot be more than 900.

To apply as a couple you have to get on the housing list as a couple through whatever rules the council has. Typically you will have lived together for 6-12 months renting privately and your circumstances will have changed. Ultimately however it is up to the council to assess if you are in need of housing.

Your local authority may let you pay above the limit if you can't find a place under it, but you'll have to pay the difference.
