How did you get there? I would like to go to the Azores but it seems to be hard to get to.

The best Google Flights and Skyscanner show is via Heathrow and Lisbon but it's very expensive. Flying EI or FR to Lisbon and then TAP to the Azores is a cheaper option but it's a bit risky if you're first flight is delayed or cancelled.

Was it expensive or overly touristy?

    Thank you.

I flew through Lisbon with Ryanair and I think it was €400 in total return that way mid week. It was very good value for money over there. A lot of tourist sites are free and the food was for nothing. €20 would get you a solid 3 course meal and a glass of wine. Not overly touristy at all, there are times you do not cross tourists at all. Would make for a great activity holiday but also for a relaxing and appreciating nature trip.

Thanks for replying. There doesn't seem to be much public transport on the island. Did you hire a car? How was the island to drive on?

Yes I hired a car and found it easy to get around. I avoided all the town centres as they had small narrow streets but you could park easy outside anyway. Roads are in good condition. I would advise paying the excess on the insurance though as my car got scraped by another driver without me around and it cost €500 to fix :-(
