Shimano Ball Bearings (rear hub)

I serviced my rear hub at the weekend and noticed that the ball bearings needed to be replaced. However, when I went to buy them online I found that none of the major bike component retailers appear to sell them ..

Am I missing something here? I know sealed bearing units are more common these days but many hubs still use cup-and-cone type construction with loose bearings that need to be replaced periodically so I didn't think it was an 'unusual' purchase.
