Maybe I'm wrong and I'm hoping there's a way around this.

I want to import a 10 year old car.. low mileage, great condition etc.

    Here's the issue.

1 - You can't insure a 10+ year old car without an NCT.
    2 - You can't NCT a car without a log book.
3 - You can't get a log book until you tax your car.
    4 - You can't tax a car without insurance.

    Anyone got any ideas?

You do get the logbook with you when you purchase the car abroad.
    Is it from UK?

    Moved to buying section.

Yeah from the UK but they take the UK log book from you when you pay the VRT and then you are issued with an Irish one as soon as you tax the car.

Insure car first and they will give you a week or two to sort paperwork.
Import car, bring it to the NCT centre, they will assess VRT and you pay that.
Tax the car by using the last 6 digits of the logbook online.
    Log book arrives in post.
    Give details to Insurer.

    Point 4. is incorrect.

    Therefore, issue solved! :)

Technically you can tax it, but you will be willingly making a false statement in state document. And that's criminal offence AFAIK.

I must have over 20 criminal offences so. I've never once entered the correct details.

    Explain, please.

The process for importing a 10 year old car is the exact same as importing a 3 year old car. There are no issues or problems.

Why are people reading the responses without proper context?

You cannot tax a car without insurance in force. Technically you can tax it, but you will be willingly making a false statement in state document. And that's criminal offence AFAIK.

Not being caught does not make it lawful.

There are no issues until you try and get insurance on a 10 year old car. Most insurers won't insure a 10 year old car without a valid NCT. You can't book in for NCT without a Log Book. You can't get a Log Book until you tax your car. You can't tax your car without valid insurance. And around it goes.

What? I've bought untaxed cars before, and got the log book no problem.

Again - yes - yes, you can tax the car without valid insurance

Is there some obstacle to transferring your existing insurance to the UK car, bringing it in, VRT it, tax itm what am I missing?

I think the OP just wants to make an issue out of something that isnt really an issue.

    As already stated:

you CAN tax it without insurance (and isure the car afterwards at any stage)

    OR

If you want to insure it, just transfer your insurance to the the car on UK plates, go through VRT process and then Tax it online and ring you insurer afterwards to inform them of the new irish plates.

Also, Yes you can book in for your NCT without a logbook.

They will accept the VRT registration confirmation instead of the logbook.
