Non cheesy first dance song?

Hey there. I'm not sure if I am allowed post this or if there is a special thread for this so someone please move it if necessary.

Myself and my oh are getting married in a few weeks and we have everything planned to a T except we just cannot find a song for our first dance. Neither of us want anything run of the mill or cheesy... We are both into rock and metal music and would like something along those lines but we just can't think of anything. Has anybody found anything that would suit?

Not rock or metal but we had Imelda May, Kentish Town waltz. We were together a long time before we got married and been through some tough times and got through it together... donut suited us to a tee. I still love it

    David bowie, absolute beginners
    Rolling stones, wild horses
    Van Morrison, into the mystic

Don't know much about metal to suggest anything..

We had neil young 'harvest moon' for first dance, not sure if that's cheezy but meant a lot to us :D

We had difficulty choosing as well; my OH is not into music and we don't have a song of our 'own', so to speak. We picked 'Ho Hey' by The Lumineers and it was great. Danced to it ourselves for a few minutes then waved everyone on to the dancefloor for the faster bit at the end.

Pick something that means something to you both. Don't just pick a song that you think will be cool or whatever. If it's cheesy so what.

Great choice, I was at a wedding that used this song to in a similar setup that you mentioned, it worked very well.

There's a huge trend of this being played at weddings in the last few years.

Get everybody up in a giant circle and do the hokey pokey/cokey! No one will expect that! And it will get everyone up on to the dancefloor to have your first dance with you.

    Hi there,

I got married recently and we asked our band to do a version of bell x1 velcro. The lead singer shortened it slightly and sort of slowed it. Anyways, was an amazing version and so many people loved it.

You should have a look around at cover versions of songs you like. We found a really awesome version of "Diamonds" (originally by Rhianna) that we're probably going to use as our first dance. You can get covers of mad songs that you'd never think would work for a first dance.

I also really like a song called "You & I (Forever)" by Jessie Ware. I think it'd be a lovely 1st dance.

We had Hey Jude by The Beatles and it was a big hit with our guests- particularly when it kicks into the 'na, na, na, na, na na, na' bit :D

    Kim - Eminem :pac:

Seriously I think knocking on heaven's door is a great wedding song that isn't too cheesy .

You could use the GNR'S version if you like Rock/Metal, although I don't think you can beat Bob Dylan's

My thoughts too. Pick a song you both love, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of it. It should be meaningful to you and your OH, not the whole room. :)

We had the American Authors- Best Day of my Life. Was quite easy to shuffle to and it got everyone up dancing with us. Was good to start off with a livelier song for us.

I know a couple who didn't have one. The band started with a few floor fillers and got the party going early on. Later on the dj did a slow set and they had their first dance then without all the eyes (and the phones!) on them.

Me, I'd like a floor filler but then I also love watching the videos on other people's Facebook pages of ones that are obviously well choreographed (usually "I've had the time of my life" from Dirty Dancing, with or without the lift. I'd love one of those too but if I want one I'll have to find another fiancé

We had All I Want Is You by Barry Louis Polisar.

We are both into our metal and rock so guests were quite shocked. Go for a song thats special to you be it by Britney Spears or Machine Head.

We had You'll Never Walk Alone.
Cheesy as all hell but my husband lives, breaths and worships LFC!
We really chose it because we felt the lyrics represented some dark times we had to fight through to find each other, and there were a lot of LFC fans present who piped in with loud voices to help take the focus off the two married eegits with four left feet :pac:

I actually originally wanted Scorpion - Winds of Change, but there was a unanimous boo when I suggested it!

Everlong by Foo Fighters? Acoustic version perhaps

We had Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls.

Seriously like others have said just pick a song you both really love, it doesn't need to be cheesy or even lovey dovey, just something that you both can enjoy your first dance to.

That sounds fantastic! People laugh at me when I say I'd love "I bet that you look good on the dancefloor" by the arctic monkeys as a first dance, but with the right choreography I think we could pull it off. It would certainly give the traditionalists something to talk about

I remember hearing on the radio years ago that that song is apparently one of the most popular for a wedding. :/:)

I'm not saying the song we had but at one stage I really wanted The Road To Nowhere by The Talking Heads :) We had Irish dancers which my mam arranged and I really wanted them to do a dance to The Dropkick Murphy's, Shipping Up To Boston but I didn't get the chance to ask them in the end :(

Op i think its something you have to just choose yourself. Something you both like. :)

Nothing Else Matters is a popular choice these days but we went with a cover version of it that we felt suited our wedding day better.

By the way huge Metallica fans but felt the original didn't fit the day, I wanted For Whom the Bell Tolls but was shot down :(
