You are mis-guided here with the thinking.
A pre purchase survey is non-invasive and purely visual so no need for "specialist structural engineer that specialises in timber frame construction houses" because he/she won't be able to see a damn thing unless there are cracks and other issues

When it comes to this I'm looking at an idiots guide, I have no idea.

So would any structural do the job?

Is there any engineer that would do a more invasive inspection on a timber frame house?

For example maybe drilling a small 10mm hole to inspect condition of the timber?

    Any suggestions welcomed

If you were selling your house, would you let every possible buyer drill holes in the house? Who repairs this? Who pays for this?

The answer to your question is no. The invasive inspection can take place only after it's yours and you take possession. All pre purchase surveys are visual only.

Either way, one spot check in a timber frame only highlights one timber section. It may not give you any answers at all.

Find out what certifications exist currently on the house... The could be a cert from the original timber frame manufacturer
