Collecting car for relative in UK via my own insurance

As per thread title, I want to help out a relative - collecting a car that they intend to buy in the UK and driving it back to Ireland for them.

I have comprehensive insurance with the option to drive other cars. Would this be sufficient cover for such an instance?
In terms of the transaction itself, is there any additional paperwork required before the car is released to me given that I'm not going to be the actual owner?

Your "driving other cars" extension will have a territorial limitation in it. You will need to establish what this is. It might be ROI, Island of Ireland, Ireland and the UK, or EEA. This will determine whether you are covered outside ROI to drive a car belonging to another. My recommendation would be to ensure that the invoice is made out in your relative's name at the very least. Make sure to get the full V5C too or else it will break your relative.

The only people who can tell you if you are covered to drive the car are your insurance company. You may be restricted to Ireland or Ireland registered vehicles. It's also likely that you will only have third party cover which may not be suitable if you are driving home a car that is worth a lot

Might be best to do a temporary transfer of your own insurance on to the UK car until you get it home if your insurance company will allow it. I don't think driving of other cars third party includes driving cars on foreign plates or outside of Ireland.

I usually fly over to London and am covered to drive parents/siblings UK motors while I am there but I rang my insurance company to double check this was allowed on my policy.

I suggest you call your insurance company for a definite answer as previous insurers haven't allowed me to do so resulting in me having to be added on to family policies.
