    After much re-reading...

You have a desktop with a 750GB HDD, which you originally took from your laptop.

This laptop now has a 60GB HDD, and you're looking for OS recommendations.

It depends mostly on what you plan on doing with it, but you'd be fine with any of the lighter Linux distros I'd imagine - Arch Linux, Lubuntu, etc.

Lubuntu is pretty tasty, given a great new lease of life to a ****ty laptop of mine. Wouldn't even run windows unless you had days to boot the ****er.

i used ubuntu before it was a bitch to set up was wondering if there was any light os's i didnt have to config and that supports those keyboard and mouse sharing apps for free (lets u use 1 keyboard and mouse 2 pcs)

no need to configure Ubuntu just install
no Idea about the KVM app you are using but just install Ubuntu, it won't take long and there is even a trial that it offers you so it doesn't even install to disk

Peppermint OS is working grand for me on my dinosaur Toshiba Satellite laptop.

I've a 60GB SSD in it and it boots in under 5 seconds. Cold boot!

I'd recommend creating a "live" usb of peppermint. Very simple by using the likes of Rufus, just drag and drop.

When booting, tap F12 and select boot from usb. You will get a "live" preview of what the OS is like and then if you wanted you can actually use gParted to set partitions / wipe the drive to prepare it for windows if you still wanted to go down that route. Although, unless you're using any specific Windows software, I wouldn't recommend it. For example, I use LibreOffice for all my word / excel needs, and browse the net using Chromium and Firefox. VLC works as my media player for all formats.

OP built his/her PC and borrowed a HDD from the laptop to make it. Now has a spare 60GB in his/her old laptop with no OS. Looking for recommendations for a good one as all it will be used for is internet, so nothing "over kill". He / she was thinking OSX or ChromOS (uncles recommendation). He / she knows they can get away with a copy of an inactivated copy of Windows, but likes "messing around". Then proceeds to revel in "new bleep to break" and that the "i" key works "sometmes".

OP just wants it as a separate computer for playing music and web browsing. There's a piece of software that he / she wants that shares the keyboard and mouse between two computers and is looking for any free alternatives to this software that would work on Linux (Peppermint OS). If I know any it's "greatly appreciated". OP used linux for a week, subsequently didn't touch it for a month and then forgot the password.

So... to hopefully clear up a few things. The alternativeto website is great for finding apps that are as close as what you're looking for which will work on other systems. If you have the name of the piece of software that you used to share your keyboard and mouse and put it in to that you can narrow it by "linux" operating system to see what comes up.

As I suggested above, I'd try and create a live USB and mess around using that for a bit to get used to the layout, terminal, using package manager, checking if the hardware is compatible, etc.
