"Richmond" electric guitar

Hi All,

Looking for a starter electric guitar for my son (8 y.o.). Have been looking at mini strats on Thomann for 110 euros or Stagg S300 on Amazon for £79 but today at the local electric shop they had an offer on a "Richmond" stallion (I think - or was it hamilton) for 95 (reduced, allegedly, from 215). It comes with hum bucker pickups.

I can't find any info on the internet about these guitars and have no idea how they compare with the other options above. Anyone here used them, any advice?

I don't know much about Richmond beyond the notion that they're not particularly good! It may come with poor action on the strings, which might be off-putting for an 8 year old.

Have a look at the Hofner Shorty on Thomann. I have one, and it's a cracking little guitar. Small body but a full size fretboard that your lad can grow into. Think mine was around €120 when I got it.

Thanks Grolschevik. Hofners look like a good choice but I think he will find the shape offputting and I want him to like the whole package etc...

Both come with single coil pickups, and I'm really clueless as I don't play myself, but for a beginner it shouldn't make a lot of difference, right? The Richmond in the shop comes with humbucker pickups.

How about a kids version of a telecaster. Makes a change from all those strats. Musicstore is a rival to Thomann in Germany and has similar prices and shipping. Do you need an amp and accessories? A starter kit is probably the cheapest way to go for that.
