Disabled Toilet Requirement

Hi Guys, I am setting up a bakery with a sales room at the moment. I had originally planned to have a seated area in the shop but have decided against that on account of the lack of space.

My question is whether I need a disabled toilet in the premises despite not having to provide a toilet to customers?

    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

How are staff sorted at the moment?

And is there about the nature of work for staff that someone wheelchair bound wouldn't be able to do the job?

There will only be one staff toilet on the premises, I'd like to include a shower but that won't be possible if it needs to be a disabled wc.

Yeah there is no way a disabled person could work in our bakery, we make mostly bread which is extremely physically demanding work.

    Thanks

I understand the sentiment 100% but these days that sort of language, in the wrong hands, will get you into trouble quicker than you can make bread!
U can have a wet room shower in the necessary toilet

What if down the line you took on a disabled person to work in the office taking calls etc?i dunno if by law you have to have one tbh just on the hypothetical point i made then you might have to have one

Our building is very small so there will never be space for an office.

It depends on the nature of the works.
Are you going through a change of use, material alteration of the building?

    Is a fire cert required?
What's the current use of the unit?

Yes change of use was granted a few months ago, our FC and DAC are done but the DAC assumes we have a seated area but that is no longer the case.

    Thanks,
    Adam

Then you may require a new FSC and DAC?
Your agent should choose the purpose group and then design it accordingly. If the purpose group changes then it may require a re-design.

In any case, based on the change of use application, then you have no choice. Accessible WC required, the size of the unit will decide what size the WC has to be and what diagram you must follow from Diagram 15a or 15b in TGDM.

Thanks for your help, so from what I understand an accessible wc is required regardless of whether disabled people can work in that industry. Is there any way around it?

I have attached a drawing, it would be far more practical and allow us much more work space if we could avoid the accessible wc.

Why can't a person with disabilities work in the industry?

Accessible WC required thankfully. There is no way out of it thankfully.

OP only sees what he wants to see

If the building has a nett floor area less than 200sqm (which it appears to), then the minimum you'll need to provide is a WC with a turning circle of 1500x1500. It would be 1800x1800 otherwise. See diagram extract below. You'll easily be able to achieve this for the customer toilet but there's no way you're getting this for the staff plus you can't have the door swing out into a access route like that (for an accessible toilet).

I think the answer may lie in your deliveries entrance. If you can flip those doors so that they swing out they could be considered as part of your means of escape (with the appropriate hardware). This might allow you to block up the access near the oven and just use than corner for a big staff toilet/wetroom. You would need to revise that ramp externally to allow for the doors to swing out.
You could block up the door into the kitchen where your public WC is as this would allow for the door of that toilet to open out. At the moment, like I mentioned previously, it's opening out onto an access route. You could always have the door to this public WC open in directly from the public area as you'd have the room there.
See attached. You would need to get all this agreed with the fire officer of course!

OP can provide one accessible toilet as per Diagram 15b. This can be used for both staff and customers. No need for 2.

Yes, agree. Sorry, I was overlooking the fact that the OP wanted showering facilities.
