Hello, I've just started a self-build project on a new house (bungalow). I'm completely new to building so I'm looking for the stupid questions to be answered here hopefully! I've got the rising walls completed - 4 courses high and now the blockie has left for a few weeks. Which is good so I can catch up on the details of what should be focussed on next. I'm putting the drainage coming out from all the bathrooms etc under the outside footpath which will eventually surround the house, so I told the blockie to leave the "opes" for these at the third course high in the rising wall, which he did. Here's my question - should I get him to put lintels over these opes before he returns to start blocking from the FFL to the Roof Level? Would very much appreciate some feedback.

If you don't understand what you're doing then why would you risk building a house?

Thanks for repy Johnny. The answer to your question is that I'm happy to take the risk. Can you answer my question?

Your engineer is the person to ask. No-one here knows what weights are coming down through your walls, what strength blockwork you used, what sizes opes we're talking about, strength of the foundation underneath, etc. etc.

Yes. He should put lintols over the opes.

That's quite a risk, best of luck. There a Homebond standard detail which answers your query.
