I am looking to go working in either city for a year (maybe more)but cant decide, im a sw dev (confident of geting work on arrival) and looking for a change of scenery. I thought some of you in after hours might have been to either city and could recommend which would be the better city? So this is for anyone who has lived/visited and could possibly give me pros and cons of each.

I know lisbon has the sun and zurich is expensive and comparing two very different cities. Have not been to either and dont intend to visit before i go as i will just judge it too much, will just rock up :-) So which city should i choose?

If you're so confident of being able to get a job why limit yourself to those 2 places?

Its what i have narrowed down to, i guess these are the two that appeal to me based on research.

    Hi again,
Huge difference in cost of living, job opportunities, language etc between those two.

You should have picked a more realistic pairing to choose between.

I hope you're good at recycling. My college roommate moved to Zurich (she's German) and didn't separate her coloured glass (I think it need to be clear, green and brown separately) and her neighbours went through her trash, found something with her name on it and reported her to the council. Apart from that she absolutely loves it and has just bought her second house there.

I worked in Zürich for three months. It's a fabulous city, everybody is lovely and accommodating. They have lovely restauraunt too.

I've only been on holidays to Lisbon, that's nice too.

I'd suggest Zürich out of the two though.

My SIL worked in Zurich for a few years and liked it, but it's very very expensive. I remember visiting her and coffee for 4 people with a slice of pizza costing the equivalent of over €120, and that was a few years ago. When she was made redundant she and her husband were given notice to leave the Switzerland almost immediately or face deportation.

Wanting to move to a city you've not been to is idiotic.
    How's your Portuguese/German?
Have you a job lined up?
    Where will you live?
Do you know the average salary?
What happens if you can't find work?
Do you know how to access the health service?

I know Lisbon well but couldn't live there!

Utter nonsense. The OP has stated they have researched and these are the cities that have appealed to them most, should they give up on the idea and just stay t home because they've never been to either place before?
What happens if you can't find work?

You get a Ryanair flight home for 100 euro.

Was your SIL a non-EU citizen?

No they should get a flight there and see the place first.

Zurich is central, you could visit places from there. That said a train ticket to another Swiss city could be €80.

You should tell that to the 25,000 Poles who moved to Ireland

Lisbon is a much nicer city but Zurich would be better for a career perspective. Also salaries in Lisbon would be quite low but it's not as expensive as Zurich.

I lived in Zurich. Great city, great wages, you'll figure stuff out as you go along.

What did the research entail? Are both hotbeds of SW development, that those outside the industry might not be aware of?

Otherwise they seem like two very disparate destinations.

Like I said I have done the research, looking for opinions not more question s :-)

How much is a pint over there?

It depends on what you want..
If you want a regimented lifestyle with a European finance orientated city, skiing and outdoor activities, then it's Zurich.
If you like a more laid back lifestyle, with sun and Belem pastrys, then it's Lisbon!

cheers, any particular reason for zurich over lisbon?

Like I said I have done the research, looking for opinions not more question s :-)

But, the two options clearly show you didn't do enough research. Only by asking questions can anybody get sufficient details in order to assist you - if you're serious.

Did you ask yourself that question?

He was never there. As, I think you probably know.
