According to a516.digital website Viacom is to launch Paramount UK free to air on all major platforms. The article states that the schedule will consist of dramas and movies and that Channel 5 scheduling team will be in charge of the scheduling. No date has been confirmed yet for launch of the channel but I have a feeling it will be something on the lines of Spike and won't be added to the irish epg.

I guess you must be depending on Sky, because some of us have no problem with EPG for Spike ...... see this for Sunday.

You should consider being a bit more specific about things ..... this is not a Sky forum ;)

Thanks for the 'head's up' about Paramount ;)

Cheers for the info op. I use free to air so should be no problem. Get spike and spike+1 on that as well as ch5 HD. Paramount will be a good addition.
We are being spoilt with free channels lately.

Broadcasters seem to be increasingly happy to take their chances FTA, have SKY started to impose more onerous terms and conditions for being part of their set up? Or are the numbers just not adding up in other ways?

I'd say the customer base for sky and the likes are falling and operators like Viacom would want the biggest possible audiences.

Wonder what the breakdown of income for a channel like this is on Sky income V's advertising income. The switch to a wider audience would increase advertising and sponsorship revenues.

The Broadcast news website has this article about the channel.

It's reported from Broadcast that the channel will include premium entertainment formats and HBO quality drama & comedy. This sounds great.
Broadcast International: Viacom to launch free channel

    27 JULY, 2017 | BY MANORI RAVINDRAN

C5 owner to bring Paramount Channel to UK

Channel 5 owner Viacom is to launch another free-to-air channel in the UK and is exploring a potential move into premium scripted programming.

The launch of Paramount Channel in the UK follows that of Viacom-owned Spike in April 2015.

Paramount Channel currently operates in 115 countries around the world and primarily airs films, with a handful of acquired dramas.

The move comes as Viacom, which also operates MTV and Comedy Central, is preparing to launch entertainment and drama-focused Paramount Network in the US.

It will air a mix of big-budget entertainment shows such as Lip Sync Battle and scripted series such as Yellowstone – directed and written by Sicario screenwriter Taylor Sheridan – Heathers and American Woman.

Paramount Network president Kevin Kay told Broadcast earlier this year that it will be a home to “premium” entertainment formats and “HBO-quality” drama and comedy.

While Paramount Channel UK will not initially air these big budget dramas, it is understood that the long-term plan is to share programming with the US network and eventually commission its own scripted originals and co-produce with the US channel.

Channel 5 director of programmes Ben Frow is working closely on the launch with MTV and Comedy

Central UK managing director Jill Offman, who was recently handed control of the Paramount Channel internationally.

Both Frow and Offman will have input into the structure of the new channel, and Frow’s editorial team at C5 will look after scheduling and programming, as it does for Spike.

Frow, who ruled himself out of the running for the position of Channel 4 chief creative officer last month, could also leverage oversight of Paramount Channel’s scripted offerings as a way to bolster his scripted credits.

While C5 has flirted with comedy and drama, it has yet to fully join the scripted sector in the UK.

Viacom, which doesn’t operate a major scripted channel in the US, is keen to move into global high-end drama.

Bob Bakish, who was appointed Viacom chief executive in December, is keen to leverage in-house film and TV production unit Paramount Pictures.

In February, he said the under-utilisation of the studio had been a “missed opportunity” for the company.

A launch date and Freeview slot for Paramount Channel UK have not yet been determined.

Freesports is also due to launch before the end of August which is going to be run by the ex Setanta Sports Owners ...could be another worthy additon.

I wonder will Paramount cause big competition for Sky Atlantic who already show premium content from HBO.

It doesn't say that they will be showing HBO programming so Sky Atlantic won't be too bothered. Besides Sky Atlantic own the rights to the vast majority of HBO shows.

I knew that Sky paid massive money for HBO's premium content so maybe Viacom will also partner with HBO and produce their own content such as dramas or movies for Paramount. Either way it sounds like it's going to be a very popular channel.

I'll reserve praise. Channel 5 and Spike TV type programming is what I expect to be on it.

Given that Viacom (owner of Paramount) and CBS (owner of Showtime) are both controlled by National Amusements, I would have thought it more likely that they would seek to acquire Showtime content rather than HBO content, if they were a premium offering.

Sky Atlantic have a deal with Showtime as well as with HBO

I kind of expect the same but you can only spread the same content accross so many channels and viewers will start switching off so I hope we see new original content on Paramount.

Does anyone know if the drama series Yellowstone is being shown on freesat - Paramount or C5?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,048 ✭✭✭✭Johnboy1951

Apparently this is not going on FTA satellite ....
Paramount Network will launch on Sky channel 159 and channel 57 on Freeview and platforms that piggyback on the terrestrial service. At the present time, Paramount Network isn't due to launch on Freesat.

    https://www.a516digital.com/2018/06/paramount-starts-uk-test-transmissions.html

Its a pity, but it seems those of us using FTA/Freesat satellite will not get this.

C5HD seems to have some link though.

Might make an appearance on Freesat after all. This webpage has a space for a Freesat channel number as 'TBC' (To Be Confirmed).

Ya Spike, C5 and Paramount seem to be all linked. It could be on the My5 app too.

Would be great if it was

    Thanks, that is promising!

Lets hope it does FTA satellite even if not on Freesat EPG.

I read the 1st page of this thread and it seems it will be older tv series running on it. That makes more sense.

Looks like it definitely won’t be launching on FreeSat on the 4th.

A reply to a query I sent FreeSat:
Hi Maz, the Paramount Network isn't launching on Freesat this week, but we hope to get them onto the platform in the future. Rest assured that as soon as we have some news we’ll be sharing it with our customers via email, and shouting about it here on Facebook (so make sure that you’re signed up to receive our emails to ensure that you’re one of the first to know! We will be looking carefully at FTA satellite to see if something happens.

The channel on test has changed to unencrypted today, and more recently no signal at all.
Maybe it is moving to a more permanent transponder ........ (hope :))
