Hot Water Temperature

    Hi,

I have a zoned gas heating system where one of the zones is for the hot water. I have this zone set to come on morning and evening for about 40 mins and this heats the water perfectly fine for showers and dishes etc.

Now to my question, the thermostat on the cylinder is set to 50, but it never actually gets up to this temperature and the water temperature is perfectly fine. I have seen warnings relating to Legionnaires disease and the need to have water temperature set at 60. Should I run the boiler for longer to heat the water above 60 even though it would essentially wasting energy as I don't actually need the water hotter?

Does anyone check to see if the water reaches the setpoint to protect against Legionnaires disease so am I overthinking things here?

    /T

It is not wasting energy by heating your hot water to 60c , it's the required temperature to heat the water to to then safeguard you from the possible effects of Legionnaires disease.

It would be worth you putting this question to your service engineer on your next annual service so they can confirm all your setting are correct.

Yes would go to 60C with it. You'll be using less as you mix it down to required use. Safer and very little extra cost IWT.

Thanks for the replies. I'll adjust the stat and see what the difference is.

    The temperature settings here are:
62C Thermostat at about 1/3 way up the hot water cylinder, where the indirect heating coil is located.
70C Thermostat at top of (oil) boiler to switch burner.
40C Thermostat at top of boiler to switch circulating pump.
21C Thermostat on wall in living room.
It's a bespoke low technology arrangement using relays.
