    Hi

We're thinking of outing Sky and getting a Saorview box instead. What would be the best one to get? And do we need any extra equipment like leads and so on?

Of course, we will still have the dish, and there is an outside aerial. Do we need to get an approved installer in?

Total noob at this, so sorry for all the questions!

In an ideal world the best approved solution is to get the Walker Saorview PVR which will use your outside aerial and the Humax 1100S Freesat box which will use your existing Sky satellite to get the UK channels https://www.freesat.co.uk/channels

    Saorview box €90

    Humax Freesat box circa €250

If you want to do things cheaper you could go with approved boxes with no PVR included which means no inbuilt hard drive to record but usually they have the ability to record on a USB stick or external hard drive. It could also be possible that your TV if it's less than 6/7 years old that it has a Saorview tuner inbuilt and no box may be required just plug the aerial directly in.

Outside these options you can use a combo box which will allow Saorview and Freesat channels on one box, the disadvantage is that when frequncies change on Freesat channels they will not auto update and you will have to manually set them up. Here's some combo boxes...http://www.freetv.ie/saorview/boxes/combos/

There are no Freesat combo boxes that I am aware of, all the combo boxes I see are Free To Air Satellite and not Freesat receivers.

It is important, to prevent confusion, that the correct naming is used, so this is not 'nit-picking' ;)

Sorry to hijack the thread but I'm in the same boat. I'm sick of Sky but not entirely sure what the other options are.
I bought a Panasonic TX40CS520B two years ago; it's a smart TV but I can't seem to find out for definite if it's saorview enabled. When I disconnected the Sky box and went to search for channels it said to check the aerial. Does that mean with a basic indoor aerial (that I;ve seen for about €20) I could get the 10 ish (forget why I think that number) channels? But i'd need a combi box to get the UK ones? Feel a bit clueless about it all¬!!

It's less than 2 years old in this review, I'd say it 100% is enabled, a cheap indoor aerial might do it, it's by no means ideal but can be fine if your near a transmitter.

Get a Freesat box for the UK channels via your satellite dish. Have a look on Youtube for reviews of Humax Freesat boxes for an idea of the features.
