Broadband and Fair Usage

Im with permanet , this afternoon my broadband stopped working so rang them and left a massage, they called back 10mins later and advised me to unplug my modem and plug it back in, it worked all up and running,
now the assistant then said by the the way you have a red flag on your account, he said you have gone well over the fair usage policy of 40GB a month you have used 347GB in a month.
i was surprised at this, he said your broadband speed could be slowed down or cut off for a few days if this continues.
Now my sons are the biggest users of course, one on Xbox live, and one on pc Facebook etc.. i check emails, Boards, on my pc etc..my wife would use her phone for Facebook ,sometimes we may stream a film every couple of weeks, not often.
So is 347 GB in one month a extraordinary amount to use ? with my sons being off school i know usage will be higher, i thought it was unlimited but obviously not, would 40GB per month be the norm for fair usage ?

TBH I think they are correct as that's part of the terms for their wireless product. I presume you can't get proper broadband.

It's very clear on their site so you're doing well to have downloaded so much without being restricted.

Eir's fair usage allowance is 1 TB per month on an unlimited plan.

Taken from another thread on the "Talk to Eir" forum:
eFibre Unlimited Broadband plans come with a Fair Usage Policy. For all customers on these plans, the Fair Usage Policy is 1TB of data. This translates to 1,024GB of data. To give you an idea, this would work out at 655,360 web pages (with 1.6MB average file size).

While this is a huge amount of data, in extreme rare cases, we have had customers exceed this limit. For those that do a charge of €2.50(inc. VAT) for every 10 GB up to a maximum of €100(Inc.VAT) per month will apply.

Are you sure nobody has accessed your broadband externally?

I use 45-55GB a month, on my phone, only when out of the house. One person.

For example, thats 13Hrs of streaming. Or in a 4 person household its 3.25hrs each, per MONTH.

Permanet are using old fixed wireless tech with limited capacity, I'd look for alternatives.

Permanet used to have no cap whatsoever but had to implement one because the network was being crippled. They're still using DOCSIS 1.0 in some areas so they just don't have the capacity. Still, that's a very low cap for today's use.

Use this. Even if you pay business pricing Permanet will only offer 60GB.

Usually there's a higher prices business package you can opt for

Yes, ED E mentioned above but that will only bring it up to 60GB not much of a difference.

Does your provider provide access to a usage meter?

If they are expecting you to keep to limits they need to provide you with a method to see your usage

If they tell you you are over the FU limit, they have a way of measuring your usage. If they don't share this and expect customers to somehow know what they are using, then it's time to think about moving.

Slightly OT - but Imagine have been enforcing their 20GB limit per day pretty strongly without giving their customers a means of checking. It's ridiculous of course, but they seem to get away with it.

I did hear of Imagine sending an email/text to warn when you were approaching your daily limit? I am about to get Imagine installed and will be coming from Virgin unlimited high speed broadband to possibly 60mb and 20gb per day :(
