I am considering a wireless broadband provider for Beara, Kerry. Does anyone have any experience of SCC Broadband?

    Many Thanks

They used to have packages that ranged from 4-10 mbits. This increased recently to 10-40 mbit for some of their customers on the back of the fibre that's now in the area.

My neighbour has it and thinks it's wonderful. I tested it (about three years ago) and she was only getting 3/4 mbits, so I didn't bother. I know someone in Tousist who says he only gets 1 mbit with SCC and that's today.

The installation charge of €180 was a big turn off. 4G is becoming quite common now -it's in Kenmare certainly; the Bonane mast I think is still 3G enhanced. But, you should also consider a dongle. The student one at €10 a month is a bargain, if you know a student.

Check out Eir's rural plan to see if you're on it -it does include parts of the Beara.

You need to find a close neighbour who has it and run Speedtests.

    Thanks for your reply.

We had Vodafone 4G mobile with dongle, but bandwidth gets used up by all the visitors in July and August, dropping to 1 mbps or less.

SCC installation is now €160, but monthly cost is less than Vodafone, with no cap.

Cannot get any fixed broadband as we have no phone line and the local exchange cannot deliver broadband either.

With the dongle you really have to move around the area and find good spots for speeds, but 4G is a recent enough introduction in the area so I feel spoiled.

As to caps, the only way around it I've found is to have a couple of pints in certain pubs which have FTTC connections.

Well not off to a good start with SCC Broadband..

SCC were due to install the broadband today and never turned up.

Rang them an hour after their appointment time and was told they would be with my 'this evening'. As of 7pm no sign at all!

If this is what they are like BEFORE they sign me up, what will they be like afterwards I wonder?

Well SCC turned up yesterday. Friendly and helpful.

Install took 1.5 hours and cost €160 (but see below).

Signal tested and max available to me was 45mbps download and about half that upload.

Stonkingly good for rural Kerry. Had got 1 meg from vodafone (summer - winter was about 6 as less bandwidth being used).

No contract, no download limit with SCC (which helps offset the install cost).

You can also go onto your online account and change your package in seconds. So for example if you have the basic 6 meg package and need to upload big files you can change this to a higher package just for one day. Afterwards change it back and then only get charged for the time on each.

Basic package is €36 a month. No tie in, no data limit. I've opted for a business package at €65 (20 megs).

Very happy so far. Has transformed me browsin' experience. \

    Hah!

    That really has me confused.

The €36/ month package is their basic legacy package. That's supposed to be a 6mbit one.

The €65/ month one is their 15mbit legacy package.

They have a new (non-legacy) package called Air Turbo with 40 mbit speeds for €80/ month.

You seem to have got the best of both worlds. :pac:

But that's supposed to only be 20mbit speeds.

Have you run speed tests at different times of the day?

sorry, you're right it 20 - lightning fast compared with what I was getting . Test shows speed is slightly higher than that.

Yep. I'm envious............doesn't really work for a holiday home though.

    Understood.

You could however run all year at 36 Euro and then upgrade just for the time you were there...
