Audi or BWM petrol?

Looking to buy 2012-2014 Audi A4/A5 1.8 TFSI (170 bhp) or a 2012-2014 BMW 318i/320i. Will probably have to source one from UK, as they rare and overpriced here.

Hopefully the government is going change the tax/VRT rules in favor of petrol somehow, but even if they don't I don't mind paying few quid more on tax for the pleasure of not having to drive a tractor (diesel).

Which one would you go for and why? Also, any alternatives I should consider within the similar price/age/performance range?

Audi, purely for the better/more modern interior ... would need to be quattro though

Depends really, the A4/A5 interior of 2012 to 2014 would have been around since the model launch back in 2007/2008. That model 3 Series would have been launched back in 2012. Neither are great designs these days honestly if that's the most important thing in your buying decision.

Why does it need to be quattro? If it's a 250bhp engine perhaps, but if its only 170bhp the FWD will probably be fine...no?

I'm sure FWD would be fine, but Quattro would be better.

In fact the 210bhp 2.0 TFSI Quattro would be an entirely better option.

Ah yeah if you were going for the 210bhp then I'd go Quattro. But if it's the 1.8T I'd probably stick to FWD.

I actually prefer the Audi's interior, the MMI display perched atop the dash looks lame in the BMW.

Reliability-wise, are there any major issues with these? The early TFSI engines appear to have suffered from eating through oil, but I assume this was all sorted by 2012? Any issues with the BMW 2.0 units?

That just a nice one I randomly picked off Auto Trader. I'm sure there are cheaper examples than that on the market... be it private/higher mileage/older year

Stretching timing chains are or were a problem on both models. Not sure if VAG moved back to a belt on the Audi 1.8 TSi engine like they did on the smaller TSi engines.

If I was buying a 2012+ BMW 3 series, I would be looking at the 328i. Rwd, 240hp, 2.0 litre turbo petrol with similar running costs to the 320i. What's your budget?

Just looking at autotrader and I could probably get an early ('12 - '13) 328i. Good call!

Not sure what you will stretch to but I've an excellent 142 328i thats better specced than any car you will find anywhere

It is a 4 cylinder twin turbo yeah, has 245BHP so very lively car.

Under the hood it says twin power turbo which I always assumed meant it was a twin turbo but from a few google searches apparently it is not. A bit more info on it here

Like the badass look of this one. The pre-facelift front looks a bit dated now, but overall it's a nice specimen and the cheapest of them all.

Classy, just needs a window tint and maybe bigger alloys. Shame it's a manual though. I don't mind the manual in the A5, but somehow it just doesn't go with the 5 series.

Like the paint and the alloys, but I am not sure about the interior. It probably looks better in real life than it does on the pictures though.

If I had to choose out of the 3 you posted I'd go with the Black A5 prefacelift. It looks the best and it has the more powerfull 2.0TFSI as opposed to the 1.8TFSI

Both of the Audi's are Front Wheel Drive though which is a shame

The 528i is dull and boring and does absolutely nothing for me looks wise

That being said, neither of the 3 cars are very well specced :-/

I would be looking for something "proper" like this to be honest:

QUATTRO
Full MMI with 2 SD slots and Sat Nav (not the crappy "concert" cd player)
Bluetooth
DSG with paddles
Bang & Olufsen

.....Also cheaper and better looking that the other 3

Not keen on white and not keen on brown leather and somehow the wooden inlays make it look tacky (at least to me), but I would definitely consider a different color combination

Also, I am bit concerned about the boot size/shape on the 3, need to properly look at one.

I get your point, but while it's cheaper to buy, the tax is probably 750 on that (vs 280 on the 1.8 TFSI or 390 on the 328i).

Also, it will be 10 years old in less than 3 years.

Both these factors will affect the resell value.
