I applied to be a carer for my brother at the start of June. Just got a letter today saying I've been rejected and I can appeal. Has this ever happened to anyone and did you get the carers allowance then? I'm in Letterkenny. Thanks in advance.

why not go ahead with the appeal. Other's experiences will have no bearing as each case is considered individually.

A lot of people get turned down don't feel too disheartened what was the reason he was refused?
If you're going to appeal it make sure to add new information to explain why you are appealing and to add weight to why you deserve to be approved.

You can also ask for a review that means your application will be gone through page by page to see why it was turned down.

They normally state why they have refused you. You should base any appeal or review around that. So if they said you don't qualify for Carer's Allowance because you work outside of your caring duties for more than 15 hours per week you should see about reducing the number of hours you work. If it's because they think your brother doesn't need a carer then you could get doctors letters etc.

Hi, I would advice anyone going for an appeal to write and ask for an oral hearing with the appeals officer. This allows you to speak to someone making the decision face to face and letting them know how your illness affects your life and why you need a carer. You could go with the person who has applied for carers for you.

My friend was turned down as a carer for her mother but was accepted on appeal. Hope it all works out for you.

Compile a diary that outlines what you are required to do for your brother every day. Do it hour by hour.

Things like: get him up every morning. Dress him. Help him with toilet/washing. Feed him. Brush his teeth. Give him his meds.

Do his shopping. Wash his clothes. Bring him to GP/ mass / rehab centre or whatever.

Make it as easy as possible for the Appeal Officer to get a picture of what your daily routine is like and how dependent he is on you.

I got accepted as a carer, so all worked out in the end. Thanks for all your replies.
