This is my replacement fuel pump fresh off ebay and it's just simply buggered, right? I'm not a fuel pump expert but there's no way a healthy fuel pump would make this noise, surely?

Ah hayur they can't be that soft or everyone that ever ran out of juice would be having to replacing their pump immediately. I did fairly extensive testing on my old one dry and it sounds perfect compared to the very first cycle of this one.

Your running it without any fuel going to it, what noise do you think it's going to make ffs. Connect it to a source and record a video then.

Have you run fuel through it?
Run it wet and see if it makes the same noise, I don't know if they are diaphragm or impeller type but impellers make a noise as they spin around.and don't have any fluid to take the small clearances up between the impeller shaft and the magnetic impeller.
Fish tank pumps sound the same dry.

I don't understand the needless aggression - my post was a question, not a complaint. What difference does it make to you to be swearing at me?

So which of these two pumps is good and which one is bad?

    In any case, once I tried to contact the seller - I had to raise a refund request - I linked my video over and he responded within 15 minutes and said;

"Hi there, Really sorry to hear that you're having a problem and will accept the return. They are usually very reliable and the bike was broken for unrelated issues but the pump has been in stock for a while and this can cause issues".

new one sounds ****ed the second one sounds grand what were you replacing it for? not pumping the right amount in 3 primes?

The bike hasn't been running 100% for the last few years- it would run lumpy from time to time. It was also laid up for 3 of the last 5 odd years - once for a year and again for two years. Most recently, one day a couple of weeks ago it developed the classic fuel pressure symptoms - it was running kind of lumpy, dying under hard throttle and stalling at idle but running reasonably well under low load, the pump got a little louder in use.

The model is known for fuel pump problems - specifically, the integrated fuel filter clogs and it's not serviceable or available separate to the pump unit. The bike was laid up for two different stints in the last 5 years. The first was for a year, the second was for two years. When I put it back on the road, it was running very poorly and everything pointed to fuelling. I had a mechanic look who confirmed it. I cleaned the filter out as well as possible on the bench and had the injectors professionally cleaned and the mechanic refitted.

The only curious thing about this case is that when I emptied the fuel out of filter, there was about a half a cupful of petrol which seemed oily to the touch and didn't smell very strong. I'm wondering now if the filter was just clogged with varnish. I ran fuel through my own pump on the bench and there seemed to be no lack of pressure. I feel like at this stage, if I stuck it back together, it might just work away but I'll check the flow rate - it's meant to be 1200ml/ 30 seconds.

At this stage, I may yet just strip the filter off the ebay one and use that with my own pump. An actual replacement aftermarket pump costs about €100 from a reputable source which is all still cheaper than the €680 a brand new replacement from CMSL.

you can pump in reverse to clear the internal high pressure filter

the one you can get to is no good

I think you can drill out the internal filter and use an inline fuel filter

I was looking into all this when I suspected my pump was dying

pictures are fooked but essentially you just pump in the opposite direction and it blows a tonne of ****e out of the pump from places you can't clean any other way

Would you try a rebuild kit?

I'm not ruling that out yet - I think I'm going to do a flow test and see how I get on. If I'm right about the varnish clogging the filter then I should be getting the right numbers. As I say, it seems that the filter is the weak link here unless my pump has been working overtime..

Y'know, I tried that and I got very good flow the 'right' way. When I reversed the flow, all I got was bubbles.

Cheers, I found that thread and then I lost it again!! I think I'm going to go down this road if I can get through this particular episode.

Mate I'm not being agressive but seriously run fuel through it and record it, what noise do you think it will make dry

How is anyone supposed to know what a component that is supposed to be lubricated by fuel should sound like running dry . You've probably destroyed it doing that already
