I have had the 70-200 F4 for a number of years, it’s a great lens but you may find it a bit short for plane spotting.

I have one that I bought second hand. I had no long zoom.. longest was 24-105L. I like the lens, though it is still quite short and I imagine too short for what you are looking for.

I recently used the 70-200 with the 1.4 converter for a trip to Saltees and whilst it helped.. it wasn't really an ideal solution. I rented a Tamron 100-600 and that was amazing.. quality was there and it had the reach I needed. It's heavier and bulkier, pricier too.. but it was fun!

I'd stretch it out to the 300 at least if I were you.

Can I ask what you didn't like about the 1.4 extender. I have the 70-200 F4 and 300 F4 and have been considering getting the 1.4 for extra reach.

It's not that I didn't like it but even with it, the reach wasn't really sufficient.

Otherwise, it does increase the minimum aperture and on an f4, handheld with fast moving subjects.. that's not really ideal.

I have the tamron 600mm. It's a great lense but I don't get to use it much.cost me 740 on eglobal central 2 years ago. The shots of the birds of prey I have on Flickr are with it.
Planning on a trip to the saltees this weekend and bringing it with me if anyone's interested in a trip.

I'm thinking about picking up the 70-200mm f4 IS. I'm on a crop sensor though but I've heard that it's very good on crops. Any of you use it on a crop sensor camera?

I basically just want something that will give me a good bit of reach when out and about.

I'll post later tonight. Just got my laptop back from Lenovo ..who managed to wipe my hard drive and delete my programs.
Tiriel is correct it's a 150-600 not a 100. ( Too many lenses in my pack)

Have yet to meet anyone disappointed with the 70-200 f.4. Great walk about lens, very sharp and light to carry.

I do some motor sports, mainly motorbikes and find 200mm can be a little short, {I use Sigma 70-200 f 2.8]. I am looking at Sigma 100-400 or Canon 70-300 L lens which another lad uses at motorbike racing. Bothare light enough to carry for long periods and seem to be good quality wise,

Have used a canon 100-400 recently my friend is selling but could not get used to it. It is fairly heavy but very sharp Was the older push pull version

Slightly off topic but the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 has caught my eye recently. I have it added to my Amazon wishlist. How do you find it?
