Temp insurance for transport of imported car

Am hoping to pick-up my car tomorrow from Northern Ireland but am having difficulty with the insurance transfer onto the vehicle on a temporary basis.

Basically my insurer (AIG) wants to transfer insurance permanently onto my new UK car which leaves me stranded until the car is VRT and Road Taxed. I want to park up the new car until it is VRT and road tax and sell and use my old car in the meantime, not to mention my taxsaver car park ticket is assigned to the old car!

What I want to do is temporarily transfer insurance for 2 hours to get the car to the house and begin the VRT process. I want to be able to revert back to my old car until a) I get the new car VRT and b) get the old car sold.

If possible, with whom can I get insurance for 1 day to get the new car home?

While I discussed this all that with the insurer in two phone calls with them today, they will not provide temporary cover of any description once you own the car. It is permanent or nothing, scandalous. I want to use the old car and attempt to sell it while the VRT process is initiated.

Any reasonable suggestions? How have others dealt with this issue?

I am not sure what the hell to do. My insurance is up shortly, so if I activate the change, my NCB cert would show a NI Reg as opposed to my old car which is also not ideal and raises questions with a new insurer.

You are really made jump through hoops in this country to get anything practical done.

Take a brand new insurance and cancel within 14 days.
Typically you'll be charged pro-rata without any cancellation charge.

Can you get a friend to temporarily transfer their policy? Then you may be able to drive it if you have driving other cars on your policy or have them drive it for you. Throw then 50 quid cornthe hassle maybe?

Hi Grogi, I don't have my no claims and I cannot be insured on two cars separately, surely?

JBJ, not possible as other half is driving me to train before going to work.

It is a pure mess, but an eye opener. I will have to see what the garage will do...

WHY? What if you had two cars? Just insure it as a new driver, without and discount.

Permanently change it tomorrow to the new car.

Then the day after permanently change it back.

When ready to VRT, permanently change it to the new car.

    Don't mention the T word.

Each change costs money - around €25 or even more...

Might be the thing to do, yes it will cost but they said I could not change it back. I presume they have to change it back if you said you did not buy the car in the end or would they check?

Long day, what is the T word ?

Can't see how this works as they wouldn't have an insurance interest and the 3rd party extension wouldn't apply to a car he owned. What he should do is get a friend that drive it on a 3rd party extension.

Does third party extension work on a uk registered car?

The country is a nightmare, whatever do returning emigrants think of the system of insurance that is so inflexible?

I left what I thought was the most simple aspect of the purchase to today to find it to be the most irritating irrational and inflexible for my needs. You would not believe how junior the person was that I had discuss this with but I kept calm and asked if someone with more experience would ring back. It was that person who suggest my OH transfer their insurance onto the car! That would involve 2 people taking a day off work and two cars coming back.

It depends on the insurer. When I lived in the UK (until last year) I regularly had friends/family over who needed to use a car. I recall that AXA at least had a territorial limit which mean that 3rd party extension applied in the UK as well as Ireland. Some of them only included NI and thus I added them to my insurance.

In fairness, plenty of threads on here about buying in GB, not to mind NI. The insurance issue has been out there plenty of times. Your issue is the you haven't gotten rid of your original car. If you had then you could simply transfer it over permanently. The fact that it will be on UK plates for a few weeks is a little hassle, not a real impediment.
