Audi A4 gearbox problem

I had the car (spec below) at the mechanics last week and he identified a potential issue with the gearbox. He said there is play (3mm) in the driveshaft going into the gearbox and the hole the driveshaft goes through is now bigger than it should be and could get worse. Best I can explain it. I took the car to a gearbox specialist and he said the bell housing is worn.

Anyone heard of this happening before?
What can cause it? Just wear and tear?
What's the result of not fixing it?

I've 3 options on the table right now
    1. Do nothing
    2. Repair the bell housing (if it can be reparied) - €800
    3. Replace bell housing with new one - €1400

I've no pics and that's about all the info I can remember or understood. I was planning on holding on to the car for another 2-3 years. Any advice or input welcome.

    Car:
    2009 Audi A4 B8 Avant 2.0 TDI (143hp)
