    Good morning,

What issues might occur, if the turbo actuator, is causing problems.

    Saab 9-5.
    2.2 tdi.
    2004.

I aim to pinpoint the fault opposed to trial and error fault diagnosis.
(no engine mgt light on dash)

    Thank-you.

I presume by actuator you mean the waste gate actuator?
This controls the opening and closing of the wastegate inside the turbo charger which in turn controls the level of boost pressure. When open it allows the exhaust gas to bypass the turbine so the compressor side spins slower and you make less boost pressure. When closed, all the exhaust gas goes through the turbine.

The actuator usually never keeps the wastegate fully closed or open. It opens it and closes it very quickly in order to control the boost pressure.

The only problem with the actuator I can think of is it getting stuck. This would either leak to boost spikes if closed shut, or if stuck open, the car wouldn't make any boost pressure and would make less power and feel quite slow and sluggish.

What car is it? What exactly is wrong with the actuator?

Sometimes it loses boost pressure other times it doesnt.

Are you talking about a wastegate actuator, or a variable geometry vane actuator?

    Wastegate actuator

What symptoms are you seeing that make you think its the wastegate actuator?

Check all vaccuum lines going to the turbo and actuator to make sure there's no obvious leaks. Also check the boost pipes coming from turbo charger to intercooler to intake. Just because it's losing boost intermittently does not mean that its the wastegate actuator. It could be any number of things.

Know what you have before you go looking for a problem. Your car does not have a wastegate of actuator. The turbo is a vgt system and has a vacuum can to control the vane position and therefore boost levels

What exactly is happening while driving?

If the vanes are stuck open the turbo won't spool up to speed as fast/lower in the rev range and if stuck closed it will overboost

    Is the actuator leaking vacuum?

    The turbo stops boosting sometimes.

I think this might be an ecu issue.

It probably stops boosting because the turbo overboosts and the ECU goes into limp mode.

What remedial measures should be undertaken to resolve potential turbo over boosting?

    Wd40 vanes of turbo.

    Don't do this

Use oven cleaner to clean the vanes
