Proof of Earnings for Housemate

I am renting a house where I am sub-letting two of the rooms on behalf of my landlord (i.e. I am the only one on the lease but the money from the two rooms are paid directly to the landlord).

One of my housemates is currently on the dole and is being means tested. He is required to get a copy of the lease (the lease is in my name only and doesn't mention anyone else) and a copy of MY bank statement. As you can imagine, I don't feel comfortable giving my bank statement to anyone and am confused why my earnings would have any impact on my housemates dole.

Does anyone know if this is regular practice? I really don't understand why my earnings or my lease would have anything to do with my housemates dole.

    Thanks

This isn't regular practice. the only payment that could require your details is fuel allowance.

For payments like jobseekers the only one that should effect someone is a spouse or partner or their parents if they are under 26.

I'm using an app on mobile so providing links is a pain but if you Google jobseekers allowance it will lead you to a citizens information page on it. There's a heading for means assessments that outlines the conditions of the assessment and nowhere on that does it specify room mates. Present this to your room mate ( in case he's pulling a fast one on you) and of the welfare office genuinely is the issue have him present it to them.

It may be that when asked who they live with, the sub-tenant said you, when the question is really asking about cohabitants and dependents.

Perhaps write a letter, explaining the situation and enclose the lease. State that you are not in a relationship with the sub-tenant and that you don't support them financially.

You don't need to do any of that. It's between your room mate and social welfare. Why would you get involved any more than you need to.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I will definitely look into the citizens information page.

Yeah the first thing I asked was if he was sure he didn't tell them we were a couple living together because it seemed so odd. I have no problem showing them a copy of the lease but as I thought, my earnings mean nothing to them. I did ask the housemate for the number of the person who was requesting this information and would explain to them myself that I am in no way connected to this man and that I would not be supplying copy of my bank statement.

    Thanks for the advice!

Absolutely no need. I worked in DSP and only relevant in co habitating

Copy of lease yes, they may ask for this but as your subletting you would have to write a note that he is living there. Your bank statement no. He's picked it up wrong
