I have two question regarding the NCT, it is my first time:

    1. Must the car be insured in order to pass the NCT?

    2. Will they charge the re-test fee 28€ for failing the tyre condition?

    thanks

    1) No, you don't have to present an insurance certificate, just the VLC to show ownership. A technician examining the car wont give a fig if he spots an out-of-date insurance disc in the window

    2) Yes

There is no retest fee for failing on tyre condition.

I thought a retest for tyre condition was a visual and free

You don't need the car to be insured to actually do the test, however you will need the car insured if you are driving it to and from the NCT centre.

1.No the car doesn't need to be insured, but obviously you shouldn't be driving unless you are insured though.

2.No, there is no charge for visual re-tests. In fact I've gone back with a tyre changed in the past ans they didn't even walk across the carpark to check it, just gave me the cert:eek:

Its probably fair to say the different test centres are consistently inconsistent on the matter, probably to the extent of the mood the goon behind the desk is in.

I have seen plenty of retest fees for tyres.

Isn't it fairly cut and dry that a visual retest is free? It's even written on the fail sheet.

I had thought would be visual but this is from manual

"Any tyre or wheel examination must be performed with the vehicle raised on the lift to ensure that all
parts of the wheel and tyre can be examined thoroughly."

Which would indicate in lane test, surprised me but there you go.

Might not always apply but definitely can.

Might depend on the exact cause of the tyre failure. For example, if there was a bald patch on the tyre (causing the failure) but the rest of the tread met the legal requirements, you could show up with new tyres and they'd probably give you a pass on a visual. But if you replaced the failing tyre with secondhand rubber, they may want to put it on the ramp to check the entire surface.

Just guessing there, it could also be just that no two NCT centres are the same as others are saying.

No that is still only a visual and won't require a ramp.

As in you were present at the time and seen them checking the tyres and charging a retest fee or you just heard of it happening?
