Power steering failure - Focus

Have a mk3 focus and after about five months f buying it i was driving on the motorway one evening, the power steering went and got a message similiar to steering malfuction. Pulled over, restarted and the steering returned to normal so thought nothing of it. Happened again about a month later but this time it didnt return. Had to get towed away, and the independent mechanic done a check on it and said it needed a new steering rack. It was then dropped to a main ford garage, they hooked it up to the system and said all was needed was a software update and steering was fine and safe to drive. About seven months after this, its happened twice again and now im being told by another ford garage i need a new steering rack costing about €1400 in total.

If the ford dealer that first diagnosed it as needing a steering rack it would have been covered under the warranty, now im outside the warranty and its a lot of cash to be out of pocket for something that wasnt diagnosed correctly the first time around. Again the steering is fine for the moment but chances are, it wont be long before it happens again. Anyone come accross this issues before with this model? Do I have any comeback on this as I was told the car was fine and it didnt need the part. When i rang they said as its an intermittant issue its hard to diagnose and after their checks everything seemed fine. I can understand that but its an issue with the steering not a problem with an electric window. Should every precaution not be taken to ensure the saftey for the driver?
